Both, short because they're easy to remember, but long because you can get nice keywords in the domains.

Shorter is better, but one long word that is easy to remember is better than two or three short ones.

Shorter are easier to remember, but longer ones are more valuable, especially if it's a really nice keyword/phrase.

Long enough to be descriptive, short enough to be useable.. I prefer 8-9 letters at most. Obviously, the shorter, the better.

Preferrably short, with one or two keywords. For example, if you have a web design company called Praxis, praxiswebdesign.com is better than praxis.com Or, you can register both, and promote the domain with keywords on the internet, and just point the shorter one to your site using a 301 redirect.

There are many goods to having a long name. I prefer either or. If I am developing a site, it doesn't matter if the domain is long or short. If is short it saves me a alot of time, because many people type in short names (ie. car.com, shorts.com, etc) but if it is long (ie. BasketballClub.com, WeatherTornado.com) then I would have to develop it into something useful. Get my point?
