If you are going to transfer and renew your domain name to secure and reliable place, I'd like to draw your attention to sibername.com, enom.com and eurodns.com - these are reputable domain name registrars which have a great variety of accreditations and nice reputation in the Internet services market. Just compare them and deal with the one which will attract you more.

If the domain is near expiry it would be risky if you would like to transfer to a new registrar and renew it so renew it with your existing registrar at the most.

You can go for Godaddy, Name.com etc they are providing excellent services. To renew your domain name with them you need to transfer your domain name first.

Key phrase above: renew my domain which means they already have the domain and it's up for renewal.

To lessen the original poster's confusion from all the replies so far:
  1. You already have a domain registrar for this domain. You have to find your login info for this account. Also, make sure that the contact info is correct, this will affect how you proceed in the following steps.
  2. Check the current domain registrar's terms of service. They may not allow transfer of domain registrars within a certain period of time of renewal date (usually about 3 months, but double check).
  3. If it's too late, then you are stuck at the old registrar. They will have rules about how soon after registration you can transfer to a different registrar.

If you are allowed to move this domain to a new registrar at this time,
  1. Then find a new domain registrar (what most of the replies were about so far) and open an account.
  2. Go into the NEW account and request a transfer of domain registrars.
  3. You should get a request/notice that someone is trying to change registrars from your OLD registrar account. If it's you, then approve.

If you are still confused, please reply.

If you are happy with your existing registrar then the right place to renew your domain would be your existing registrar.

I suppose that is the only place you can do that. In other case that would be called transfer.

To renew your domain name,if you satisfy your existing registrar you can do it from your existing registrar. But if you don't like the existing registrar, you can transfer your domain name to another registrar. The new registrar will give steps to help you.

If you have the promo's of your current registrars then you will get some sort of discount in renewal. If you would like to renew it at lower cost then transfer it to any cheap and reliable registrar like name.com

In this case transfer and renew would be the same payment. All in one

Yes. But if he renew his domain name on the godaddy that would be domain name transfer and not domain name renewal at all
