domain - ID Protect...?

My host is charging me $40 per year for ID protect.
This has gone up and imo is too much.

Can I bypass my host and do this myself? Its not complicated is it?

Any comments?

Thanks,,

Are you trying to say Host or registrar. Bcoz as far as I know domain registrar provide ID protect that also called whois privacy protection.
As you said $40, it is way way way high. Change your domain registrar.

What is ID protection? That can be interpreted in the different way by different web hosting providers or domain name registrars.
So please explain that with more details please

I know that privacy protection is feature of domain registrar's but look at the price of $40. This can not be true or OP might talking about something else...Lets wait for his response.

I assume you are talking about WHOIS privacy protection.

Firstly, this feature is provide by the domain registrar NOT by the hosting company.

Secondly these days mostly domain registrars are providing free of cost. I think you should move out from there. Think twice before payment

Good Luck!

It's Just changing the Whois Info

However you need to make sure it's valid and someone is at the other end if not they can take your domain away if you don't have valid whois information listed.

whois privacy will only protect you from people who won't try hard to find out who you are. If your doing something unethical, immoral, or illegal then people will go the distance to make contact. Your registrar also has an obligation to be upfront in certain situations.

As for pricing, 40$ is the highest price I've heard. All of the leading registrars charge a fraction of this price. It's important to have proper identification with your domains (especially email). If your in the right situation you can consider opening a small corporation or a proprietorship in your municipality. A small business can cost very little and depending on where you are you may not have to have any financial activity to maintain the identity.

some cctld's require either a personal name, or corporate name. A corporate name can be in the hundreds, but more pricey and time consuming is keeping your paperwork in order.

Many options. A postal box with a cell phone number and a specific email can also do what you need for privacy.

Good Luck.
Jack

Whois privacy is the way to protect yourself against spammers. If you are going to do something wrong or illegal - be sure you will be found
