Domains Snatched by Registrars

Most registrars have agreements with dropcatchers like snapnames and pool that give them first dibs. Also sites like register.com have no problem snagging the gooduns for themselves. It's a conflict of interest that ICANN doesnt allow but ICANN doesnt do a whole lot. Then there's domain tasting, which is companies with mad money who can afford to register all dropping names, they wait 4 days and delete all the ones that arent gonna perform.

Domain name prospecting sounds like a LOT of trouble. I should have registered my first name.com a few years ago - I chose .net instead back then, since I thought I was not a "commercial" firm.... needless to say I haven't been able to get it back... ever...

It does happen. That's valuable information which people will pay to get.

for .ca I strictly use cira.ca and for .com I use namespro.ca and often moniker.com

I wont use the private whois sites like whois.sc/domaintools.com to see if somethings available.
