Domains Snatched by Registrars
Okay, so a year or so ago I go and check try a few domains to see if they are available. I decide on one, talk to the client, and the next day go to register it. It's gone - taken. So I've been wondering for a while now, do the domain registrars share the domains searches with other people? Who then snatch up the good suggestions?
To try it out I am testing it. I have found a reasonably good domain, keyword, and checking its availability at several registrars, including Godaddy and NetSol.
I'll check back in a couple days and see if it's been snatched up.

I also wondered about that a while ago, I checked a domain, had to talk about buying it with the organisation that would use it and that took a few days and when we wanted to buy it it appeared to be sold and the buyer was a big Dutch media corp. who told us we could rent the domain from them if we wanted to use it.
They own the domain now and have a blank page up on it.

The domain I checked it currently available, so I'm checking it on a few more registrars to see if any snatch it.

I used to always think that but I don't know of any factual info that supports it

Oh, they do it...
That's one reason I use this:
http://instantdomainsearch.com/
It's the easiest domain search ever and it doesn't waste my time with useless .info type extensions.
After I find what I want I go to registerfly and take care of it.

I figured as much. I wouldn't have bearded this except I thought it was really interesting. I know a lot of people have thought about this. However this is the first time I have seen it in a forum.

Cricket-
Very Interesting. Thank you for the articles. They were a great read. And I've found a new interesting site to follow.

That article you posted is but the icing on the cake. It's being tackled among
the ICANN working committees, and it'll take a long while before they come up
with something definite.
IMHO it's not going to completely stop that "domain tasting". Many might then
stop, but not those who have sufficient capital and enough metrics to gauge
their risks and rewards.
Simple solution, really: just register the domain name on the spot. If you see a
domain name available but didn't take it there and then, don't expect it to still
remain available for you when you finally get around to it.

I use that site as well, lately I've been getting a lot of false availiblility readings. Wondering if you have had the same problem?

Scary article. I guess I'm a bit naive, but I had no idea this type of thing was possible.
For what it's worth, I've always used GoDaddy for my domain name research and purchasing and have had many weeks go by between research and purchase without running into problems.

for the few bucks they cost it's typically worth it.
