which domain to use

Hello.

It has recently dawned on me that the .com extension stands for commercial, hence denoting a given site as commercial. Does this mean I will have to use .info domains if I use no ads?

*.com can be also treated as "company". Plus it's more common extension than "info"

Really you can use whatever extension you want, except for .gov or .edu. .com is more popular in the U.S., even for personal websites. People are just so used to typing in something.com that it's easier for them to remember .com domains.

the original concept might have been commercial/company but it's now used so the visitrors can remember the site easily.

The original intentions for domain extensions do not matter nowadays that much at all as you can see variety of different sites with extensions that years ago would have not been that acceptable. As far as .com and .info goes than for eCommerce site I would use .com and for informational website .info. You can use ads on both of them.

if you've some kind of personal site to build then there is no problem for going with .info.

but for some public business you are advised to use .com

It has nothing to do with ads. .com tld is recommend for commercial web sites. It's not a rule or anything. .info are for information sites. You can use ads in any tld.

It's better go for .com tld if it's available because it's the most popular tld. Specially if you are branding a name it's lot better go for a .com than any other tld.

Sites I use for affiliate stuff I use all tlds .com, .net or .info if I can find exact keyword domain.

Register whatever domain extension you want. .com is the most common and ranks highest in search engines, so if you can, go for that.

Well .co domain is the most popular and widely used extension than .info. It has nothing to do with ads. .com tld is recommend for commercial web sites. You can use ads in every tld site.

You can use a domain name with .com extension for non commercial web sites.

I think, because sometime domain .info cost: 1$ very cheap => easy to spam. so google is not like this .

The .com portion of the extension indicates the domain is for commercial purposes.

I think the OP already knows this. Got any advice on the second part of the OP's initial response in bold?

when the internet started to evolve, they came up with 3 extensions, .com .net and .org, com for commercial, .net for networking and hosting companies, and .org for non-profit organizations,

as internet evolved further, more extensions came into the line, [.edu, .biz, .info, .coop..... ] and the compartmentalization lost its relevance

so basically u can use any extension now, for any type of site, less .edu, and .gov, these are for educational and govt website respectively; afcourse if you find that domain in that extension available,

M.

You can use .com extension because it has higher advantages than the other domains.
