Which domain name is more popular in India : .com or .in ?
Are there any facts and figures to support it?

Basically Google prefer domain extension if you want to promote site in any particular region.

Personally, I think if you building a site that is only going to be relevant to Indian uses, you should go with the .in extension.

Regional domains have been known to rank better in the search engines (for their region) than dotcom domains.

Go with the .com if you want a global market and the .in if you are only targeting the Indian market...

I will always recommend com domain. Since it is globally targeted by search engines. I also experiences in google india domain in domain is not doing well.

If you are targeting Indian traffic then I guess .in is better, if you're US or basically worldwide traffic, then a .com is definitely the choice.

If you can afford both domains, get both. You might be able to rank higher almost immediately with your .in domain and gain a foothold traffic-wise before you migrate completely over to your .com.

.com is an international iconic domain extension. It is definitely more commercial to have the .com - I know I sure would rather have the .com.
Plus, if you expand into other markets, the .com is more likely to be accepted.

If you see on Alexa.com, most of the sites popular in India are .com only. Very few .in domains are as popular as .com sites. It is better to stick with .com for global results.

better if you ask me which com domain because it is universal in every country, and not limited to the region and more cool.

I think country based domain name is well if you are looking to target a fixed geographical location but not doubt, .com is the best for worldwide.

As I know .com sites are much more widely popular and therefore desirable.

They are also easy to remember.

Yes, .com is easy to remember and is widely used. Unless you are building a site targeting Indian traffic or want domain name matching your brand name go for .com. Another point to remember is that whois privacy cannot be used for .in domains.
