I like Yahoo small business. I bought all my domains there for between $2.99 and $4.99 for 5 years. and when and if i want to sell I call the customer care which in my experience has been excellent, I cancel my account when I call and 4-6 hours I receive a security key that I give to the buyer. You also get a free starter page and free Yahoo hosting, some of my domains my starter page was bumped to the first page on a yahoo search.

Just bought one .com name fro godaddy.com, it is not what it stated as $1.99.
I paid $11.99 for one year.
I also bought .co.uk name from www.telivo.com for 5.88 pounds for two years.

Domains $7.85 +tax and less
With Yahoo the 3.99 is only if you use their other services, according to their web site.

It's $2.99 for up to 5 years but you have to pay for all 5 years at once, if you pay for the first year its $2.99 and $9.99 for evey year there after. You do not need to use any other service.

The known namecheap coupons have expired but $8.88 is already cheap IMO plus they're easy to use and support has been quick for me.
I am sure Godaddy's $1.99 domains are for when you purchase any non-domain product, then you can get the domain for $1.99, Yahoo has similar promotions.

Yahoo is the cheapest domain registrar I know of. But as others said there is always a catch in buying domains from such registrars. Pay a little extra and opt for a reliable registrar like Namecheap.

Only if you do their monthly hosting at the same time. Otherwise I think iPower is the cheapest (ipower.com) and about $2.99 with no other services. However that's for one year. if you want longer it jumps really quick.
I'd like to register a name for a couple years, maybe 5 ( i think 7 or 10 is max right?)
where's best place when registering for many years a time?

1&1 is the cheapest I've found. It's always $5.99 for .com/.net/.org/.us/ and a few others, free whois privacy.
There's many horror stories about them reguarding transfering domains out but I've never had a problem doing that. I'll say their support absolutely stinks, long wait times, no answers, etc. Their control panel isn't the easiest to use but it works.
All in all, I wouldn't recommend them for anything but the price.
Edit:
Woops, old thread sorry guys.

I've had several domains renew through them. They charged the $5.99 to my credit card they have on file. I've never been overcharged for a renewal by 1&1.
Edit to add:
They send you an email 45 days before letting you know that the domain will be renewed and charged to your CC.
