My domain held hostage by ipowerweb

My website has been down since March 7,2006. I e mailed my hosting service provider vizaweb and asked why is it down. Reply was a statement of my bill to be paid by March 21,2006. I replied back , my site is still down and my bill dosen`t have to be paid until March 21, it is March 7 why is it down??? When I tried to access my website it said domain locked, I could not access control panel either. I sent another support request, this time I am told my former web hosting service has locked my domain name! I asked how could this be when I transfer to vizaweb and my site worked all year? I told them not to charge my credit card if I don`t have a domain name to use.Vizaweb did nothing until March 21 , then they took a years payment by chargeing the card in file. Vizaweb then sent hosting@ipowerweb.com a request for my domain name. They did not release my domain name yet and it`s April 1 . I called ipowerweb and they are really nasty, they are telling me I owe then a $35 chargeback fee. I said what ! ? The year before was when I paid to renew for two more years with ipowerweb. I paid before due date on March 3,2005 then on March 7 my site went down. Days went by , I sent e mails to support , no replies. I call them, the rep tells me I did not pay and thats why my sites off. I told him I did pay by credit card over the phone on March 3,2005 for $168 . He then gave me a different number to call. That number said "voice mail ,leave your message" . I did that several times and guess what, No Replies ! This went on for 3 weeks . No one would reply , I had no website online , they got paid $168 . I called my credit card company and got my money back . Then the very next day , I get an e mail from Ryan Murphy of ipowerweb. He said the domain did not auto update(blah) and he would give me 3 months free for my troubles. I said ok, I will re pay and stay , but then Ryan said I had to pay a $35 chargeback fee! I said , you guys didn`t respond to any calls or e mails until I got my money back and I am not paying because your system didn`t update. I asked , were your phones and e mails down also ? You did not answer any of my requests for help. Then I moved to vizaweb. My site worked for one year and March 7 , 2006 it`s off again and ipowerweb is holding my domain name. kumitekid.com
I contacted the BBB , ICANN has a complaint form I filled out, and the Attorney Generals office. It`s been a week since I filed complaints and I have no website, Vizaweb took their payment without my permission , ipowerweb holds my domain name. I made the name up for my sons karate site and ipowerweb stole it. kumitekid.com means ready to fight kid
Please, ideas or any help ? Please send to kumitekid@comcast.net

This could help

I managed to extract one of my sites by going to the registrar directly, and the registrar took it away from them and transferred it for me. (Apparently mapname didn't respond to them, either.) ipowerweb is not a registrar so they depend on another registrar; there is a list at:

http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html

You can usually look the actual registrar in a whois for the appropriate domain. Yours appears to be ONLINENIC, INC. Contact them and fill out a complaint about ipowerweb. They already know that the site is yours for the next year - the ns record expires Mar 2007. However, this procedure only worked with one of my sites; the other registrars didn't respond. You should be prepared to show that last year you registered the site with ipowerweb since ipowerweb has made itself the contact (that is how mapname held half my sites hostage).

By the way, your dns records point at the nameservers of http://www.onlinenic.com/dnsdiy/, so you might see if you get back up there, switching them to frame vizaweb, for example, as a stopgap measure until you make the transfer succeed.

The second thing I did was email the company that if they didn't release my sites for transfer, I would start describing my experience online at sites like this one. If you search "mapname.com" you can see the results -- they did nothing for weeks and I pretty much filled out a complaint somewhere once per day. My complaints appear in the about half of the top 20 results of a google search.

I doubt this actually helped because if there was anyone reading their mail at mapname they probably would have just released my sites rather than keep me waiting for weeks, but there is a certain satisfaction is doing your civic duty. If you follow this path, I'd advise breaking your story into pieces: first this happened, then this happened, etc. to make it easier to follow; the current post is something of a jumble because your story, with problems with both a hosting service and a dns service/reseller. Why, for instance, did ipowerweb complain about a chargeback when it was vizaweb that you took the money back from? Are these the same company? But if so, why are you trying to transfer from ipowerweb to vizaweb? Take a deep breath and write out the story chronologically, including when you registered, etc. That will help make the situation understandable.

Good luck. I know this is miserable. Make sure your new registrar has a better reputation.

Yes, I went to the registrar .I even sent them copies of my receipts . Then the registrar sent me a copy of an email they sent to ipowerweb. They told ipowerweb to contact me about this and I never heard anything after that from either ipowerweb or online.inc. So I sent a second request demanding online.inc to release my domain name to me . Ipowerweb then unlocked it for one day and the second day it was locked again. So I wrote to the attorney generals office and they are handleing the case right now.

Hmm not the first time I have heard people having bad experiences with Ipowerweb. It sucks, when people mess you around like this - hope you get it sorted.

I'm very curious if the AG was helpful.

I was with ipowerweb a couple of years ago, I had all sorts of issues with them. In the end I wound up moving to a reseller and now and doing my own thing with PowerVPS.

Here's a thread I wrote a year and a half ago about the problems I was having with them: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...hreadid=358617

I was also with them years ago and when I left it took me over 2 months to get themto unlock my domain name so I can transfer. If the registrar does not have a control panel to where you have full control over the domain name, then I wouldn't use them, becasue then you are at their mercy.
