Google Wins 750+ Domains From Cybersquatter Who Wants ‘Google’ Trademark Canceled

Cyberswatters and those who think using a trademarked name is ok take note:

Quote:
The National Arbitration Forum (NAF) has given Google ownership of more than 750 domains that used its trademark name, often in conjunction with other well-known trademarks and/or celebrity names.

In one of its legal filings, Google called it “one of the most aggressive campaigns of domain name infringement that [Google] has encountered.”

The domains were registered by Chris Gillespie between February 29 and March 10, 2012. They include domains like googlechevron.com, googlecoors.com, googledonaldtrump.com and googlegaycruises.com.

I bet he registered those quite a while ago before he realised WIPO were going to hammer him!

It's fairly common knowledge now that you shouldn't register domains that contain a trademark.

After all you wouldn't call your new restaurant "mcdonaldburgershop" would you?

The same principal applies to domains! Companies are so hot on it now there isn't much point in registering them at all!

For a fan site is different, but to make money from parking your page on the name of the company like I bet this guy did ... foolish!

Sometimes its a newbie webmaster who doesn't understand the trademark thing. This is something all webmasters or soon to be domain owners need to know about.

It would stink one day to find out that you are going to be sued by a very rich company for domain trademark.

That's true. In this case it looks as if it's a real cyber squatter.

Having said that as long as you hand the domain over and don't try to hold it to ransom the dispute is usually solved fairly amicably.

Lots of companies, lots of websites, lots of trademarks; isn't it impossible to avoid all of them? although the well known ones can be avoided during domain name registration. If someone is using google like term in their domain, it's clearly indicative of either webmaster being connoisseur of web or a newbie in web world

Godaddy and other relevant sites should have blocked this kind of domains before releasing it to the users.
