Short domain name that is catchy or long domain name that contains words?
Which of the following would be a better option for a social network: a relatively short domain name composed of two syllables that is catchy, but doesn't have any meaning in the dictionary (e.g.: comfof.com), or a longer domain name composed of actual words that have meaning (e.g. communityforfriends.com)?
If you were to start a site, would you go for a short and meaningless domain name or for a long domain name that contains words?

I'd have a domain that someone can remember, and has at least one good keyword. I'm not referring to an EMD of course - just one key in a good 3-word domain, or possibly 2 keys in a good 4-word domain.
Personally, in terms of length, I'd use the former over the latter.

The second one is better in my opinion. A good domain name needs to be easy to remember first, and not spammy in terms of words. So, 3-words domain is great. However, if you can search for another domain, that can help you with a shorter length. You don't need to find a domain name that no one registered, use expired domain name tools and you'll find great domains. Filter the search results the way you want, and you'll find aged domains with backlinks if you're lucky.

Just like everyone else said, I'd prefer going for a domain that you can turn into a brand. That way people will be able to find it easier by typing it into Google if they saw it somewhere, like in a watermark on a video.

I prefer to long names, you can get some advantages in Bing SE because there exact match domain keywords are still working, some free organic traffic is always good.

I use short domain names. But when creating new pages I usually use long tail keywords as page name (slug)

Hm what about domain zone? If you need to rank website locally then you should use your country domain zone (.lv .ru .ee) If you got online project (global) better to use .com
But what you thing about domain names what are ending .ooo ? anyone using that?

I prefer Short and clear Domain name. Maximum 2 or 3 word domian is good.
According to your Question,
1) Short domain (comfof.com) :- It's not look good, as well as not clear about your business and services.
2) Long Domain (communityforfriends.com) :- it's better to Compare short domain name and also show clear about your website services.

Let’s have a look at a few data that I have collected from SEOmoz and high position.
EMD has lost their average ranking from position 13 to 22 which is highly considerable.
Correlation between EMD and ranking is no more effective.
So better you choose a short, relevant and spellable domain.

I would go with the URL that will match your brand best.
Or go with the shortest one that you can still clearly see your brand in.
