I want to do a search on google to learn more but don't even know what it's called..

What is it called when you have a domain for example
www.workingwebsolutions.com but then you can also have sales.workingwebsolutions.com

how can you have something before the main domain?

I have seen this and one of my clients wants me to do it for his site

its subdomain of the main domain. also note its treated as a independent site by SEs as per my knowledge

I don't know if that's true (don't quote me on that). On one of my sites when I do a site: query it brings up the domain, sub-domains, and all sub-folders.

It is a feature in most control panels called sub-domain. No it is not treated seperately from your main domain name. Sub-domains are treated as an extension of the main site and thus contribute the over content of the site itself. It is a way to allow your visitors to look in their address bar and easily know what area of your site they are in. Similar to having your address show up as www.yourdomain com/sales. It simply looks more professional to many people to have it the way your client is asking for it.
