How often people make typing errors?
I am wondering how often people make typing errors. I saw a few typo domains sold at high prices recently.
e.g Mortage.com (typo domain of mortgage) sold at unbelievable $242,400.
I am now wondering whether I should register some typo domains.
Any idea? How often people do typing errors?

Funny how people who have no idea what planet they are on use slang words like "thnx".

There have been a lot of lawsuits around people buying up similar domain names and setting up "ad traps" on those domains. One guy, I don't remember his name, was sued by joecartoon.com for buying domains such as jocartoon.com, joecarton.com, jecartoon.com, etc., and joecartoon.com beat the pants off of him in court. So I'm surprised people are still trying this bizarre method. Anything for a buck, I guess. Many large companies now buy up similar domains and direct them to the correct spelling.

How do I find out about how many times people do typing errors per month for a particular word?
Any idea?

I can't remember the search engine but it offered a "spy" feature that would allow you to see what people are typing in to search for.
You may be able to see typos that way.
As far as seeing typos that people are actually typing in when trying to access domains directly I'm not sure you can do that.
It would be interesting to write and app that would someone capture that but they again that would probably be considered spy ware

I think it is good tool but the stats say the number of search results over 1 year.
e.g if look at "EGCG" keyword, it displayed over 900 searches in 1 year whilst overture inventory said nearly 3000 over last 1 month.
So I think it is not correct.

I think there is very lucrative market for these kind of typo error domain. But it can get into legal battles if the original company thinks that it is hurting their business, then you are in big trouble.

I think for typo errors for common words like website or mortgage, there should not be any legal implication. As I mentioned earlier, mortage was sold more than $200000. I recently register typo domains of website www.webaite.com and typo of web hosting www.eebhosting.com .
I think my domains will not have any legal implications.

From what I have seen: People typing in domain names make lots of typos. (Me included - I am a programmer and I prefer typing fast and correcting later)
I have some typo-domains that redirect to the original domains through affiliate links and on some of them I am getting sales (1 or 2 a month) just from typos - no advertisement.
You just have to be very careful not to register typo-domains of major corporations. These comapnies have more lawers than you could possibly pay for:-)
Do it with small but successful products - typically those one-page sales letter sites. And instead of using some ugly domain parking - redirect to the site through your affiliate link. You are also doing the surfers a favor (correcting their mistakes and getting commisisons for it)
The traffic you will receive also depends on the type of typo:
The best one for me has been the "s-typos": something like adwordblabla instead of adwordsblabla.
Second are all other letter-omissions (gogle instead of google)
Third are any errors where you exchange the position of two letters (stop somking instead of stop smoking)
And only then all other so-called "keyboard-proximity-errors"
(all the keys around any letter on your keyboard)
Number 3 and 4 can only be profitable on very high-traffic domains.
Another proof that this works is the fact than for most high-traffic domains that involve high-ticket items all possible typos (including over 100 possible keyword-proximities) are usually already reserved.
(try ANY misspelling of bodybuilding.com for instance - all taken!!)
So people must be making money.
Just don't do it with major corporations!
Hope this helps
