Redirects

Hey guys,

for the past few years I have been using a 310 permanent redirect to redirect socialsmoke.com to socialsmokehookah.com.

The reason we did this was to include our main keyword in our domain to improve search engine optimization. Over time, our business has shifted from a hookah specific distribution company to a more general tobacco and tobacco accessory distribution company. We would like to go back to using socialsmoke.com as our main domain name and use a 301 permanent redirect to redirect socialsmokehookah.com to socialsmoke.com

What if any are the possible ramifications of doing this 301 redirect swap?

I would recommend you to hold the current domain as it is and make the new company domain an "umbrella" domain, i.e. at the bottom of the page or in [about] section of socialsmokehookah.com to put some info like this domain is part of OR product of socialsmoke Inc.

Are you're suggesting that I cancel the current 301 permanent redirect that is currently redirecting traffic from socialsmoke.com to socialsmokehookah.com. and then leave both sites as stand alone sites that link together?

I don't have a problem doing this, although I would prefer all traffic goes to one domain as long as I do not upset the search engines by deleting the 301 redirect.

socialsmokehookah.com is more specific and keyword rich.
I think it will get more targeted visitors than socialsmoke.com, you may also wait to see other opinions to get more precise decision.
