profits with .org

Hello everyone. i have had a website up for about 3 months now and am seeking to make some sort of profit with it. I learned that the extension .org is for non profit organizations.

does that mean it is illegal or something to have a profit company on a .org?

If i changed to a .com do you think i would make more becasue people see it as a .com and not a .org?

No, it is not illegal to use a .org for a business, although dot org will be perceived as non for profit. Craiglist is a dot org. Switching to .com won't automatically make you win money. The point is to promote your site and drive traffic to it, the extension doesn't really matter.

I think extensions do matter,

When i google things i rarely if ever see a .eu or .mobi or a country domain (.co.uk etc) listing on first page of google.com

It is not because you don't see other extensions on top that you can conclude that they matter less. Think about it, when you register for a domain which one would you look for? A dot com obviously. Dot com are the most used extension and obviously they take most of the top spots. Probably eight or nine out of all the domain registered are dot coms. But if someone was to register a dot net or dot org, and the dot com owner doesn't use or optimize his site, the dot net or dot org will be far ahead of the dot com.

We have many sites which are dot net, dot cn (for China) which are better ranked than the dot com.

The only time that an extension really matters would be on a country-specific level, for instance .co.uk in UK, .au in Australia or .cn in China, when searches are conducted from those specific countries the search engines may consider them more relevant than generic extensions.

extension doesn't really matter and yes you can use .org for commercial purpose, .org was proposed to be misc tld which can be used by anyone.

well .com is much more recognized by everyone. its easier to remember for me personally

.com is more well known and .org is also but I think it may hurt you slightly in rankings. If you are looking to make money you need more traffic and more conversions. If you have traffic and are looking to give your visitors a way to make money by shopping online and your site will earn revenue then check out the shopping site in my signature and contact me there.

Extension doesn't really matter. Org is fine as long as you get right promotion

You can freely use .org for profit, the search engine is also not going to make any difference with org TLD from others.

And .org is much more than ORGANIZATION, if your site doesn't fit .com or .net, you can use .org.
