Want to transfer my domain name

Hi there, I registered a .com domain name over 2 years ago and somehow failed to renew it after the 2 years were up now I was wondering what my options were.

I am the registrar of the name and wondered if
  • - Do I have to pay my original hosts a renew fee?
    - Do I have to pay my original hosts a release fee?
    - How long does it take for the domain name to become available again & how can I find out when it ran out?

Thanks a lot

you don't have to pay your hosts anything , unless they are who you registered the name with.
web hosts and domain registrars are two different things, they can be the same company.

do a whois search for you domain name , that info will tell you the status of the domain, when it was registered and when it expired, etc.

I found this at godaddy.com:

The redemption period is a Registry level period of up to 30 days that occurs when a domain name is deleted after it expires without being renewed. Instead of just being deleted and returned to the pool of domain names available for registration, the registry holds the name in a REDEMPTION PERIOD. During this 30-day period, the original domain registrant may retrieve the domain name from deletion (usually for an additional fee) by contacting their Registrar.

This extra 30-day period extends the time available to renew expired domain names. However, all names that enter the redemption period are removed from the zone files (the list of domains currently in the global DNS); therefore, any Web site or email services associated with the domain name will stop working.

After the 30-day redemption period there is a 5-day pending delete phase. When a domain is in this phase no one can retrieve the domain and it cannot be registered. After the 5-day pending delete phase the Registry will release the domain name back into the public pool of available domain names.

The redemption period only applies for certain period of time. If this domain has been out for more than a year than you first need to find out if someone has taken it or not. Goto http://names.coolwebhosting.biz and find it via whois box if it is available.

If that is available then you can just get that domain name in under $9/yr right at my website.

If you think that your host has put the block on that then you can do very little to have it back.

If you want me to go through the history, send me the domain name.

Take care.

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this forum, just found out about it from Mike Merz.

First off, as Robert Adams stated, web hosts and domain
registrars are indeed two different things, although they
can do both, it depends.

It depends on what status your domain name is now.
If it's a .COM, go to www.verisign-grs.com, type the domain name
in the WHOIS section at the upper right, and click submit.

The result will show what status the domain name is as well
as where it's registered on the line "Registrar".

If it's inactive, that means it's still registered with that registrar.
How soon that domain will be deleted from their database is up
to them.

If the status is "Redemption Period", the domain name has
already been deleted from that registrar & will remain that way
for 30 days. After 30 days, it'll take about 5-6 days before it
REALLY becomes available.

Any luck getting it back?
