Tim Berners-Lee Doesn't Like New Top-Level Domains

Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of HTML, has been speaking publicly against the creation of a new series of top-level domains.
Quote:
He especially doesn't like the proposed .mobi TLD for Web pages aimed at cell phones and other mobile devices. And he repeated his criticism last week at the 13th International World Wide Web Conference in New York.
For more of Tim's thoughts, check this article at Computerword

Here is the complete line-up:

.aero – Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques SC, (SITA)

.biz – JVTeam, LLC

.coop – National Cooperative Business Association, (NCBA)

.info – Afilias, LLC

.museum – Museum Domain Management Association, (MDMA)

.name – Global Name Registry, LTD

.pro – RegistryPro, LTD

".museum" sounds especially wierd. I guess the MDMA is really expecting to clean up with that one.

.museum doesn't just sound weird, it's long. .info, .biz and .mobi are good though. But they're not used right so that stinks...

I don't like 'em. I think it would be best if there were just one TLD - .com

It would be best if they stick with the 3 letter norm ... .com, .net, .org rather than .name, .info and blah blah blah ... Soon we'll have people demanding that they want a dot in front of thier name for a family website ...

All those new TLD's give only room to cybersquatters and force the .com owners to register more extensions to avoid any problem. Just more $ for registrars...

Most of the good .com's were registered before 1998.
If finding a good domain name is vital for your company,
the easiest way to get a good .com name that fits your business
is just to buy the brand from someone else who owns it.
For a thousand or two, they might sell. It's much easier that way,
assuming your budget isn't tight. Basically, a good easy to remember
brand name that keeps bringing customers back might pay for itself
over the long run.

With regard to that concept, I bought 3 top notch domain names from
three different people for: $2250, 2550, and $2700 respectively last year.
All of those were initially registered in 1996. Pretty good considering that
I didn't have to build a time machine and go back for them...

disgust is liked by many
I think they're ugly, but I don't think it does any real harm. I mean, how many sites have YOU seen with a .biz or .info lately? not many.

Jonathan Lee: what domains were worth that much to you?
