Think of 20+ that sound good and search to see which are available. If it sounds good, its a good domain, just brainstorm a bit!

Depends on what you want to do with it :

If you're looking to resell a domain, go for short urls (4 letters or less), premium letters, generics, brandables & pronounceables.

If you're looking for something unique that you want to start, go for something catchy, brandable and very web 2.0 (5 letter domains are "in" right now for that sort of thing).

If you're looking to tap into a saturated market, go for generic dot coms.

Hope that helps a bit.

Word to the wise... when searching for a new domain, be aware while searching domain names on a popular domain name provider (such as Godaddy), there are bots out there that will auto register domains if enough people search for them... or so I'm told.

Third level domains? Good deal. I would agree only on the co.uk domain names.

It depends on whether or not you have the resources to build a brand around a short, memorable domain (like v7n for instance). If not, you're better of going for a domain name that includes the keywords your target audience will be searching for.

The extension will also be important. Everybody says ".com is king" and rightfully so if you are building a website for an international or US audience. If however you are targeting Canadians, go for .ca, or, .co.uk for the UK. Recently Google seems to putting more weight on localized search.
