.com isn't necessarily global - it takes on the country it's hosted in (through its IP address).

Buying 2 domains and point the one at the other may not work - Google doesn't normally index alias/mirrors.

People in the UK may have a preference for .co.uk domains.

I recommend you buy both .com or .co.uk. Having both would give you a well reconized extension in both UK and the US.

wtr to the post:
you should, as far as possible and economically feasible, have your website in all ccTLDs relevant to your country specific target audience. It makes it more personal for that region, as well as, gives you a lot of flexibility in terms of content design, marketing pitch, pricing currency, etc..

Because it can make a difference to your position in the search engine results when a user makes a search for a product or service in a specific location.

You should purchase both .com and .co.uk, a few bucks a year wouldn't hurt your pockets! That way you can market your site in the US and UK.

I agree with Savethefatemagic. If you want to start out UK-only you should use the co.uk. But also purchase the .com. If you ever decide to go international you can always redirect the .co.uk to the .com. Or you could own 2, a uk-only plus an international.
