We’re just about a month after the Windows 7 launch, and wanted to show an early look at some of the work underway on Internet Explorer 9.

At the PDC today, in addition to demonstrating some of the progress on performance and interoperable standards, we showed how IE and Windows will make the power of PC hardware available to web developers in the browser. Specifically, we demonstrated hardware-accelerated rendering of all graphics and text in web pages, something that other browsers don’t do today. Web site developers will see performance gains and other benefits without having to re-write their sites. ...
I've been tasked to begin selling my band's original tunes on our website http://sans-moi.com. I'd like to do some kind of store that allows the customer to demo the tunes and then download them at a cost. I'd also like to eventually expand the site to sell t-shirts, and other related items.

Anybody with experience setting up a pay per download site I'd appreciate your recommendations.

I'm a big fan of learning from books so I though I would share with you a couple I thought were decent.

Web design theory
The Priciples of Beautiful Web Design - This book will teach you all the basic theory of design, in relation to web design. You'll learn how to lay solid foundations to a website, that will allow you to create 'sound' designs, way before you even think about how it is going to look.

HTML
HTML 4 For The World Wide Web - This book was one of the first I bought on the subject, over 8 years ago now! It covered the basics of HTML, and after about a week I was confident at writing up, and understanding, my very own website from scratch. I'm not sure this book is being published any more, so you might need to find something similar.

CSS
I taught myself CSS from practice, tutorials and articles online, but I have, and highly recommend the following CSS reference book: The Ultimate CSS Reference

Javascript
Javascript - The Definitive Guide - The book on Javascript. It covers absolutely everything you could possibly want to know, and it is heavy to boot!

Javascript Phrasebook - Tiny book, packed full of snippets of code for various problems.

PHP/MySQL
PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites - This was my first book on PHP, and it lays the groundwork for you to create some simple scripts, using databases.

PHP & MySQL Bible - Extremely thick book, covers most of PHP. Is a great reference book.

Web development practices
Pragmatic Version Control Using Subversion - This is a must if you want to get serious with web development. Version control is basically a history of everything you've done, which allows you to revert back to things you've done in the past, which in turn acts as a great backup tool. Think Apple Time Machine, but for text/programming files.

I could recommend a tonne more; my bookshelf actually fell off once because of the amount of web development books! What I've suggested here will be more than adequate for beginning, though.

Hello everyone!

Hello everyone!

I work as one of the tech guys for a large school district. Right now, we use Dreamweaver/Contribute to manage our website, but we've been having a number of problems with that.

My boss wants us to switch to a CMS system, and has asked me to take care of that project. I've been doing research on CMS systems, but I'm having trouble finding one that suits our needs. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. What we need is one that has:

1) Multi-editor support and permissions. We have about 40-50 people in our district who update various pages, and we want to assign permissions (such as this person can edit these pages, these people can edit this page, etc). We don't care if this is done per-user or per-group, just as long as we can prevent someone from the high school from editing pages related to our elementary schools.

2) Good organization/menu structure - we have probably around 200-300 pages on our current site, so we need something that can generate a good, easy to navigate menu structure.

3) Cheap, if not free/open source - we're a public school district, we don't have money :)

That's really all our requirements. It doesn't matter if it's PHP/ASP.Net/Java, whatever it uses, we can get a server that will run it. I'm just having trouble finding one, I can find ones with great organization/structure systems, but they don't have permission controls (who can edit what), or they have great user control, but than they display just one large side menu which gets really long and disorganized pretty quickly.

Anyone have any suggestions?
