With Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft showed Wednesday it's trying to retake the browser initiative....

With Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft showed Wednesday it's trying to retake the browser initiative.

IE remains the Net's dominant browser. But perversely, it became something of a technology underdog after Microsoft vanquished Netscape in the browser wars of the 1990s and scaled back its browser effort.

That left an opportunity for rivals to blossom -- most notably Firefox, which now is used by a quarter of Web surfers, but also Apple's Safari, which now runs on Windows as well as Mac OS X, and Google's Chrome, which aims to make the Web faster and a better foundation for applications.

Microsoft has been pouring resources back into the IE effort, though, and at its Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles, some fruits of that labor were on display. In particular, Windows unit president Steven Sinofsky showed off IE 9's new hardware-accelerated text and graphics.

The acceleration feature takes advantage of hitherto untapped computing power in a way that's more useful than other browser-boosting technology such as Google's Native Client to tap into a PC's processor and Mozilla's WebGL for accelerated 3D graphics, said Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Internet Explorer.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/11/19/c...explorer.nine/

Evening all! :)

Evening all! :)

Ever since Sunday evening my lappie has been freezing at the second boot-up window. Occasionally I suddenly realise something else of varying importance had only been saved there - with no back-up...

This most likely means I won't be able to re-access the system to recover my un backed-up data - around 4Gb. To cut a long story short, I have removed my 6Gb SSD to have it put in a caddy, or adaptor to use as 'Removable storage' so I can get it back. This meant taking it apart a fair bit.

Here is a link - http://jgimages.freehostia.com/SSD.htm.html - to a page with two photos I took; One of the whole unit opened up, and the second of the top-side of the SSD. Anyway, what can I now do to get the information off it and onto my new lappie? Can I buy a caddy to put it in - any suggestions welcome - or will a Data Recovery firm now take it on more willingly as I've done the 'Physical' side for them? In all, through three companies I've received quotes from - have said between £110 to £700!

Model: Acer Aspire One Netbook, Linux Linpus Lite 6Gb SSD.

Any advice on what I can do with the 6Gb SSD drive now it's loose with regards to getting the information off will be very much appreciated.

Take care,

Google is set to become your new phone company, perhaps reducing your phone bill to zilch in the process.

Seriously.

Google has bought Gizmo5, an online phone company that is akin to Skype but based on open protocols and with a lot fewer users. TechCrunch, which broke the news on Monday, reported that Google spent $30 million on the company.

Google announced the Gizmo acquisition on Thursday afternoon Pacific Time. Gizmo5's founder Michael Robertson, a brash serial entrepreneur, will become an Adviser to Google Voice.

It's a potent recipe -- take Gizmo5's open standards-based online calling system. Add to it the new ability to route calls on Google's massive network of cheap fiber. Toss in Google Voice's free phone number, which will ring your mobile phone, your home phone and your Gizmo5 client on your laptop. ÿþ

Meanwhile you can use Gizmo5 to make ultracheap outgoing calls to domestic and international phone numbers, and free calls to Skype, Google Talk, Yahoo and AIM users. You could make and receive calls that bypass the per-minute billing on your smartphone.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/11/13/g...ice/index.html

I have several Windows applications that I have written. I want to create a membership website with a script like EasyMemberPro and charge members monthly to be able to use these programs. I want them to have to go to my website in order to access any of my programs - I do not want members to be able to download the apps onto their computer.
