Who likes optical illusions?

I came across these on my travels. Enjoy!

Optical illusions via the Telegraph News Paper

The site is a little slow at times, but the pictures are worth the wait I think.

Even after that explanation/demonstration I didn't believe it. So I did a print screen, chucked it into paint, and did a little cutting and pasting of my own. Damn it, I still don't believe it, even if the proof is staring me in the face.

The brain is a strange place.

"When interpreted as a 3-dimensional scene, our visual system immediately estimates a lighting vector and uses this to judge the property of the material."

This is actually pretty amazing. The property of the material is not of primary significance, evidently, if the mind knows what it is seeing is 2 dimensional, so it doesn't try to access the material, but apparently in this situation the mind is tricked into the 3D mode and that realization doesn't exist from the very moment the graphic is viewed, which allows us a view of the otherwise impossible.

The lighting vector would seem to have power over concrete reality. Very interesting.

I might put it a little differently, the apparent light vector has power over our perception of reality. Our brains are being fooled by its natural functioning.

Very interesting indeed.

I wonder if any web sites makes use of these illusions in their designs?

Thus my choice of the words "would seem", and I agree with your way of putting it. It only seems a concrete reality because the mind has created that seeming reality in order to function.

This would imply that brain function is impaired by scientific definition.

I think the Spinning Wheels is really funky, the first image. How can all those wheels be spinning and in both directions. It is a little freaky how easily the mind can be fooled.
