Everyone has their own style. You could invest a lot of time in each encounter. A few compliments, some small talk, a phone number request, then call a day or two later and ask the question.

Or just play percentages. I have a 2% success rate. So if I want two dates next week I have to collect 98 "no"s. Efficiency is key here so make each request short and sweet. At least short.

Most people find an approach somewhere in between that they are comfy with. Gotta find your style.
