What do you think about Alexa rating ???

When I browse sites I like to check them in Alexa (www.alexa.com) rating of each site. Do you think alexa rating is showing us true picture???

Not really. A lot of time it was showing me as loosing traffic, but my site was either staying the same or getting better.

Also, it's based off people that have the Alexa toolbar installed, not everyone does, like me.

That is what I was thinking too. But it keeps me alert all the time. Even my site is not going down. But do you have any other suggestion that I can trust ??

Alexa is a complete waste of time for anything other then comparing relative traffic levels within a vertical market. Even then I wouldn't spend more then 2 minutes looking at the numbers. It always baffles me when people on ebay list their Alexa ranking as a basis for their price, you might as well consult some tea leaves since it is about as accurate.

There is a Alexa spyware. I once found it on my computer. Infecting computers shouldnt be a very difficult thing for Amazon.

No one is saying that the Alexa toolbar numbers are false per se, just that they are completely inaccurate. So whatever your ranking is, has absolutely nothing to do with the validity of the numbers.

Alexa's information is as trustworthy as a politician. Nevertheless, I still like to check it out every 6 months or so and see what it says.

You know that if you're not even in the top 1,000,000 that your site has the same amount of exposure as the bubble boy, but if you're in the top 100,000 you are definitely on the way to being something.

Alexa is a fair representaion of how webmasters with the installed Alexa toolbar surf - but that's it.

and most of the people with the toolbar installed are usually webmasters with specific interests in webmastering, web hosting and web design.

So it's a very narrow user group. If you have a site that has nothing to do with webmastering issues, then you'll almost certainly have a relatively poor Alexa ranking.

This bemuses me.

JohnScott has an article on his website that pretty much says alexa is useless, yet in his bluefind forum (and ive seen on other forums) he actively uses the alexa rating to promote the web directory.

Now theres nothing wrong with that - every promotional avenue I suppose - however a little contradictory.

I think Brian sums it up -

Quote:

See bluefind is great - a good PR - A good alexa rating - webmasters love it. But ask the next person you meet walking down the street if they have ever heard of Bluefind - I don't think so.

(John I hope you don't mind me using bluefind as an example - but its closest to home for everyone on this forum)

Now - Johns target audience isn't normal people (he'd make no money) it's webmasters. People who own their own sites. So a good alexa rating is essential.

However to Bob, the guy who sells newspapers on my street corner... his comment is "alexa who?"

If your targeting webmasters - alexa is a high priority - but I don't think somebody isn't going to buy your product due to your alexa rating being poor.

Alexa is trash in the big scheme of things, but it's very accurate for the top trafficked sites. (Top 1,000 or so, excluding the sites that use an automated script to skew the rankings).

I asked my cab driver the other day what sites he visits. Yahoo (#1 in Alxa), Google (#3 in Alexa), and a few others - all ranked top in alexa.

I then mentioned BlueFind, expecting that he'd never heard of it, but he had. I was pleasantly surprised.
