Back in the days whenever I was broke I would hit the bloodbank in San Diego to make a couple extra bucks.

I haven't tried donating blood yet. The sight of a bag full of blood and a sharp needle
weakens my knees. I heard it has health benefits. Donating blood is like cleaning your system.

They do not pay us for donations in Canada...
They do give you a snack afterwards however... So I guess you could say you get something out of the deal

Ok, my dear raphnix, I might be indirect when i said donating blood is like cleaning up your system. So here are the Benefits of Donating Blood.

Quote:
Donating blood on a regular basis reduces the iron stores in the body and this study supports the theory that reducing iron appears to preserve heart and vascular health.
Quote:
According to www.bloodcenters.org, excessive iron is thought to contribute to heart disease, especially at its early stages.

That is very kind of you dirky.

I tried to donate blood to my friend's dad who had a major heart operation but I was underweight and they didn't allow me to do so

Well, back on my college days, I used to donate my blood every year. Our university was supporting NGO/Non-Government Organization that aims to support those people who are in need of blood but can't afford to buy some packs. Oops, don't get me wrong. It was not a compulsory activity, in fact, even if a student wanted to donate his/her own blood but he/she fails to comply with the health/medical standards, he/she will be rejected.

We don't get any reward from doing it (but there's a free snack) and besides, my girlfriend (registered nurse) told me that donating your own blood is a good thing for your body. As far as I remember, she told me that it's a good thing to donate blood because it will rejuvenate/replenish the blood circulating inside your body blah blah blah...

There is a trick! The tip/pad part of the finger is full of nerve endings so avoid that part. Instead prick the side of the finger about 6 or 7 millimetres below the nail. If you get it right, you hardly feel a thing. It is important to have a sharp pen needle, and the depth must be set correctly to only draw the minimum amount of blood.

You would think most medical practitioners would know this information but few do.
It reminds me of the time when I got hospitalized because of dengue. The nurses pricked my fingers three times a day (to monitor my platelets count) up to the point where black spots were noticeably seen on my fingers. (just like mini-tattoo )

And by the way, thanks for the tip. The next time I'll be hospitalized, I'll tell the nurses about that.

You have to use all ten fingers in turn btw, and of course each finger has two sides you can prick. This limits pricking the same place too often.

All 10 fingers? As far as I'm remember, the nurses only pricked three of my fingers (index, middle and the ringer fingers) on my right hand that's why the tips of those three fingers looks so bad.

  • religion
  • tattoo
  • piercings
  • past health problem (i.e. Hepatitis)
  • weight restrictions
