Funny Animal Facts - Strange Willderness

Hey,

Everybody likes animals to a certain extent. But how much do we know about them?
Let's dedicate this thread to our friends and name some funny things animals do.

Let's start:
Quote:
Did you know that it's only the female mosquito that "bites"? They don't actually bite of course, they just jab you with their proboscis and suck blood. The males feast strictly on nectar from flowers and other plants.
Source: Brilliant Muddy Scientist

Quote:
Both male and female mosquitoes are nectar feeders, but the females of many species are also capable of hematophagy (drinking blood). Females do not require blood for their own survival, but they do need supplemental substances such as protein and iron to develop eggs.

Your turn!

Seahorses are very strange creatures.

Quote:
The male seahorse is equipped with a brood pouch on the ventral, or front-facing, side. When mating, the female seahorse deposits the eggs in the male's pouch, which the male then internally fertilizes. The male carries the eggs until they emerge, expelling fully-developed, miniature seahorses in the water.

Only male crickets make music by rubbing their legs (wings) together. And you can tell the temperature by the number of chirps.

Do you know what is left after a tarantula finishes molting its skin?

Don't open if you are eating.

half a brain to sleep

Quote:
Dolphins have to be conscious to breath (Williams et al, 1990). This means that they cannot go into a full deep sleep, because then they would suffocate. Dolphins have "solved" that by letting one half of their brain sleep at a time.

Some turtles can breath through their butts.
Source: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/...gh-their-butts
Quote:
"Turtles have extraordinary anaerobic capacity--they have survived up to 33 hours in a pure nitrogen atmosphere. (Most reptiles have a high anaerobic capacity compared to mammals, but even they can't survive much more than 30 minutes without oxygen.) Although basically air-breathing, many aquatic species have developed ways to pick up oxygen even when submerged. Of these the most remarkable, which some turtles share with dragonfly nymphs, sea cucumbers, and certain televangelists, is the ability to breathe through one's butt. You've heard the expression 'Blow it out your after regions?' It's no mere figure of speech. Many species have a pair of sacs (bursae) opening off the cloaca (combined digestive and urogenital chamber). These are heavily vascularized to facilitate the uptake of oxygen.

Actually I just read this and find that this drawing is incorrect according to the article. The article said that only a few side-neck types of turtles can breathe through their butts, but the drawing shows an S-neck turtle. S-neck turtles retract the head backward on the vertical plane, and side-neck turtles fold them sideways on the horizontal plane.

Did you know moths are not really attracted to light? Moths fly towards the blackest point which is behind the light.....
which perfectly explains why dolphins sleep with one eye open.

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.
(What can be so tasty on the bottom of the pond?)

Some lions mate over 50 times a day.

Butterflies taste with their feet.

Elephants are the only animal that cannot jump.

A cat's urine glows under a blacklight.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

Polar bears are left-handed.
(Who knew...? Who cares! )

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for
pleasure.

(What about the pig?)

Bennie! BENNIE!!! Hi GUY. Thanks for sharing ... ???

Sorry Bennie. I'm just wondering what your post added to the thread.

Er! After due consideration and not an inconsiderable amount of head scratching and referring to my Modding Book of Bad Posting I can only conclude that the answer is nothing.

Actually that is a lie! Sorry! Your post suggests to me that you haven't quite got the idea about what we at V7N consider good posting. With that in mind I am delighted, ney, honoured, in the most humblest of ways to present for your delectation, elucidation, consumption and reading the QUALITY POSTING thread.

Please, please, please, please understand!

After spending winter in Brazil, the largest flock of Magellanic Penguin travels to the south (Patagonia) to incubate their eggs, the male arrive first and must search through a 2.1 km2 beach to find exactly the same nest they used the last year to clean it and leave it ready for the lady, which arrives a few days later. Their reproduction follows 2 rules:

-Mate selection is up to the female, and it is the females that compete for the males.
-They are monogamous (one male breeds with only one female during a mating season), and the next year the female usually selects the same male from the last season.

Penguins earned the most-sexually-boring-animal award

Attached pictures I took myself 2 years ago on that beach in Punta Tombo, south of Argentina.
