Now I think this is a really useful thread. I'm always looking for this kind of information in the UK. Unfortunately for me this is North America specific, but still I applaud the thread.

What I really like in my country is that profits from the recycling go to cancer associations, poor people, etc.

Here in US they just make more money off you, perhaps this not the way to motivate the people.

I remember a time when you could return a bottle of soft drink to the shop and they would give you money for doing so. Now that is gone and our council is threatening to put chips in our wheelie bins to monitor how much we throw away, by weight and charge us for it. BTW we are forced to recycle stuff and pay them via a tax for the refuse collection. So it will be twice taxed for the one service. Shameful!

I remember that, when you could return glass bottles and they give you back a small amount of money. I know that in US they have a new tax proposition on all soft drinks. In France they talk about a carbon tax too.

I mean governments will always find a way to tax us, they are just good at it and they are not planning to reduce their own spendings/budgets.

Yup bottle recycling was a good money earner for us as children...for those who are old enough to remember those days....and of course good for the environment too. Even the wooden crates the soft drink bottles came in had value and could be traded in for a few pennies. The ideal was when we could get a full compliment of 24 bottles in a crate...now we're talking big bucks....!
