AVG is better than Zone Alarm.. it's free. :-D

DISCLAIMER:
I have never personally used any of the Zone Alarm software products, my comment was based solely on the sales value of the two different programs.

I use sygate firewall and am happy with it.

Purchasing a H/W firewall as well though as you can't beat.

Best A/V software though is Norton or McAfee. You definately can't go wrong with them though yo do have to pay for them.

Used to do I.T. supprt for a bank in the UK and one thing that always amazed me was whenever there was a major virus on the scene, Symantec would have the fix in place on their site. Hmmm!

One thing not to do though is run 2 firewalls together (unless one is software and one is hardware). Microsoft have an article on that somewhere and I will dig the bugger out.

Friends pc had issues and he was using free NAV. I updated the defs and it found a virus after a full scan.

I installed McAfee corporate edition and it found a few hidden in the system backup (WinXP).

Paying for software? Pah!

A good Antivirus prog is definately worth the investment though.

I think one common confusion needs to be addressed here. It has to do with the so called "hardware firewall". Interested parties may want to realize that the "hardware firewalls" contain software that runs them, and can be as vulneralble to attacks as "software firewall". There is no magic to hardware firewalls. Software needs to be written to run them. No ifs, ands or buts.

Btw. CISCO has been in a pickle with some Linux fellas because some of CISCO's routers and firewalls (yes, the "hardware" ones) are based on Linux but CISCO refused to reveal the code. The said Linux fellas were very amused when those particular CISCO routers and firewalls were defeated by crackers.

Conclusion; good firewall is good regardless of whether it's "hardware" or "software" since it is.... software anyway.

I guess you have had bad experiences with it.

I know it can be resource heavy but I used to support NAV (Corporate Edition) when I used to do I.T. for one of the UK banks and it was pretty robust.

It can be a swine to remove from a system sometimes though as it leaves files all over the place when removed.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have always found it amazing that when a new virus is just on the scene, Symantec have a downloadable fix on their site with a full set of instructions on how to sort it. - (read into that what you will but I'm saying nothing)
