There Was No Need For The Retraction From Ray LaHood Re: Recalled Toyotas

There has been a big brouhaha over Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s advice about driving recalled Toyota vehicles.

Here is his first statement: “My advice is if anybody owns one of these vehicles, stop driving it, take it to the Toyota dealer, cause they believe they have the fix for it.” (This statement can be seen near the end of the video on this page.)

And here’s his second: “What I meant to say or what I thought I said was, if you own one of these cars or if you’re in doubt, take it to the dealer and they’re going to fix it.”

IMO there was no need to retract his earlier statement because both of them boil down to pretty much the same thing. We seem to live in an era when people hang on every syllable uttered. I doubt any owners of the recalled vehicles upon hearing Mr. LaHood’s first statement in its entirety thought to themselves, “I need to find a wrecker to transport my car over to the dealer so they can fix this problem because he said I should not drive it!” No. More likely their thinking was more along the lines of, “I need to drive this car over to my dealer to get this problem fixed before I go anywhere else.” But you see, most of the news outlets kept focusing on the snippet of his statement that stated, “My advice is if anybody owns one of these vehicles, stop driving it.” Thus Mr. LaHood felt the need to issue a second statement.

Why do news organizations keep doing this?
