Massive 8.8 Earthquake Strikes Chile

The strongest earthquake ever recorded occurred in (or just offshore) Chile some years ago. Well, sad to say, another very strong one (releasing 64 times more energy than the one that hit Haiti last month) struck them overnight. Check the ABC and other news outlets for details.

Let's pray that there'll be no tsunami because if this will happen there'll be many people who will lost their lives.

The strongest quake recorded was 9.5 on the Richter scale (May 22, 1960) and it generated a tsunami that affected Hawaii, Japan and New Zealand. Should these and other Pacific countries be on alert?

Seemingly quite a few quakes of late it appears, what with Haiti, Japan (Feb 7) and now this in Chile.

I wonder when the west coast of the U.S. is going to get theirs.

A Tsunami warning has been issued for the state of Hawaii. Civil defense sirens were blaring at 6am this morning. Buoy readings indicate that a wave is expected to reach the Big Island of Hawaii around 11:05am HST (less than 3hrs. from now). Preliminary indications suggest that the wave should be between 6-10 feet.

Emergency shelters have been opened and residents in low lying coastal areas are encouraged to move to higher ground. Boats are and have been heading out to deeper water.

People have begun buying emergency supplies and gas stations are reporting that they are sold out of gasoline, grocery stores are seeing increased sales of basic supplies such as water, toiletries, batteries and other emergency supplies.

For the most part, people are acting calmly and there is not an excessive amount of people out on the roads so traffic is not too bad.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected in Chile.

OMG... Believe it or not, at at least one of the beaches in Hawaii there are people surfing and others just standing on the beach looking at the sea awaiting the tsunamiís arrival! What could they possibly be thinking? Are they thinking at all?

Hope they are not going to repeat the situation in Haiti with many victims. And New Zealand and Asia are facing the tsunami threat.

A lot of earthquakes around the world this days. Not all are with the magnitude of Chile or Haiti, but still are a lot reported with magnitudes over 5 on Richter scale.

No, the one in 1960 just off the coast of Chile was the strongest ever recorded in the history of the world - not just Chile. It measured 9.5 on the Richter scale and nothing stronger than that has ever been recorded. Of course, this is not to say that stronger earthquakes have never occurred. (The world has a long history stretching back billions of years.)
