Connecting 2 computers together without a router

ok, here's the deal, i'm trying to connect my home computer and my laptop together so i can share my dsl modem internet connection between them, now my dsl modem is connecterd to the host computer with USB port, so all i need to do is connect the two computers with an ethernet cable (cross over), i did that, followed the insructions on the wizard network setup...then when i finish everything on both computers, it doesn't sense a connection between them and says that there's an unplugged cable...i checked evrything and it's fine...can anyone help me pleeeeease!! i also had some conffusion with the part with the network setup disk, what do i do there??

Its not hard to connect a computer 2 computer all you need is the 2 network cards which you say you already have and a cat5 cable.
You can either go and buy a cross over cable or just take a normal cat5 cable, lop off the end strip the outer insilator and then crip a new end on it which is easy to do with a $3 tool or can be carefully done with a pliers.
(the nice thing is you only have to do one end of the wire)

Quicker and easier thing to do is simply bridge the connections. If you are using windows XP then open Network Connections, seclect the NIC and the USB and then right click and click bridge connections.

If you are on a different version of windows then it gets tricky
