You can vote more than once, for more than one person - that is not fair.

Boy, they left out most of who I would have chosen.

I would chose Reagan out of what was given, and he'd be in my top five all together.

Greatest American would be Thomas Jefferson.

Was just discussing this on another forum....biggest waste of time ive ever seen. All kinds of people left out that should have been. What a shame that it's Hollywood over history.

What about Jefferson? FDR? Edison? Einstein? The list goes on...

that's just what american society has turned into ... celebrity watching idiots who are uneducated and uncultured. i'm being extremely general however. still, i think that fits the mold when you have people thinking michael jackson and madonna are "great" americans. sheesh. i was disappointed because of the truely "great" americans that were left out.

"FDR (Franklin Roosevelt) embargoed Japan’s oil supply in the hopes of forcing Japan to attack Pearl Harbor. Overwhelming evidence from government documents clearly shows that FDR had advance knowledge of the Japanese attack and allowed it to happen so that he could drag the US into World War II."

My bet are Benjamin Franklin, FDR, and George Washington. Can't think of who's the greatest among them though.

The winner has already been chosen. It wasn't any of these.

Oh, feel sorry to hear that. Nevertheless, I still think these two founding fathers and a most credited war time president as the greatest americans who ever lived..

Regan was the winner followed by Washington, King, Lincoln and Franklin respectively

The votes between one and two were close

contrast this to a British "Greatest" poll in 2002

And don't forget Charley Chaplin, Walt Disney, Henri Ford and a few other Americans who contributed a lot.

As an Englishman looking in from the outside I find it pretty amazing that Reagan should have been voted the number 1 American of all time. What did he do to gain such an accolade? If I had to chose a few that might be worth the title I would probably go for someone like Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. If it has to be a "cultural" icon, then why not Elvis, John Wayne or even Elmer Fudd?

We all get some unexpected entries. In the 100 Greatest Britons we had David Beckham at #33 (higher than Charles Dickens!), Michael Crawford at #17 (higher than Sir Alexander Fleming!) and Princess Diana at #3 if you can believe it (higher than Darwin, Shakespeare and Newton!!). No logic in any of it.
