"I'm a parent. I haven't got the luxury of principles"

I watched The Patriot again the other day and was especially struck by the above quote. With the economy so bad and long wars where do you draw the line? Would you do something that was perfectly legal, but was against your moral code to take care of your family?

Hi Jake,
That's a question that's crossed my mind many a times..where your principles are battling against issues that are on a collision path with it... and where to hold your ground..

It's difficult to let your principles go, as those are the qualities that define you as a person.
Would holding on to principles be more beneficial to the gains of letting it go ?

Personally, I drop my principles once in a while when it doesn't cause much harm to others or to those who can afford it.

I'm not sure how both of us differ in our interpretation of principles, but I'm selective on whether to drop or maintain it based on different situations that I cannot quite word out right now.
