Then and Now, the 60's

This Usenet thread has quickly become one of the longest in recent memory. I thought we might have some fun with it here.

In the early 60's (1960's) electronics were much more expensive but one could by all of the following for a single nickel:
A coke
A candy bar
A local pay phone call
A cup of coffee. With refills, often unlimited.

The inflation index would say that a nickle then is about 40-50 cents now. Have you bought any of those things recently at that price?

I just double checked the inflation index, 5c in 1960 equates to 37c today. I'm off to Starbucks to see how much coffee I can get for 37c.

Good luck. A smell of the brew is about all you should expect.

I think a pay phone is a quarter here. Haven't used one in ages.

They are 25 cents here as well although you are hard pressed to find many of them now because of the ubiquitous nature of cell phones...

Pay phones are a dying breed...

You guys must have real telco pay phones. Around here they were 50 cents for 3 minutes years ago and I don't recall the last place I saw one.

It was the inability to find one that drove me to the cellphone. It isn't because I like the little beast.

I find it strange that in this time it is almost of that all of us are "reachable" all of the time... I am not crazy about the idea but it is just the way it is...
