M.-J. Taylor - The Person Behind the Name

M.-J. Taylor - The Person Behind the Name

We all know that moderators are here to keep things running smoothly and offer assistance when needed, but we might not know much more about them. We may have been programmed to think of those with red or blue names simply as "forum cops", but in reality there is a real live, breathing person behind that name.

In our continuing series, this month we'd like to invite members to get to know MJTaylor a little better. Go ahead, use this thread to ask her anything! Well, remember to keep it family friendly and please don't get too personal!

Why Key West? And when Asheville?

I am in love with Key West; I walk or trike everywhere - even for all but the largest grocery runs. When I had a New Year's Day party, I took the car to the store to stock up on bacon, (not tofu, Julien) for the hoppin' John and libations.

Mornings usually find me having an espresso on the veranda of the Coffee & Tea House on Duval Street. I try to read the local paper and part of the New York Times, perhaps, (which I really buy for the crossword puzzle that I do later. I do not do it in ink). Mostly I chat; friends show up most mornings and there are always tourists. I love talking to visitors and being an armchair tour guide.

Now that it's too cold to swim -- which is a great passion of mine -- I take Karma to the dog park most afternoons. She lopes alongside my trike with great strides on the way to the park; I can barely keep up. On the way home, she trots rather more slowly. The park is another social venue for me; though I usually go off into one of the corner pavilions and do some yoga stretches.

When it's warm enough to swim, I go to Fort Zach park every day and swim the length of the swim zone back and forth. Afterwards I do yoga on the beach. I can't wait until it's warm enough again.

On Thursdays and Saturdays, I am the afternoon docent (volunteer tour guide) for the Oldest House in Key West. My latest blog post (linked in the feed above) has an overview of the house.

Jake, I am from South Florida and Key West was always a playground. When I became disenchanted with Miami in the mid 90s I bought a home in Big Pine on open water. BP is 30 miles from Key West and became "downtown." I loved my life there, but about seven years ago I was visiting Asheville which I often did in the fall, and I fell in love with contra dancing. I ended up buying a home there. Owning two homes was too much headache and I sold my home in Big Pine -- just in time! But I missed the Keys so much, and liked the one winter in Asheville so little that I rent a home here now. I really only spend the summers in Asheville now. I miss my friends and contra dancing, but Key West has me in its thrall: it's warm, it's wild, it's live and let live; it's charming and it's steeped in a colorful history, and peopled with interesting characters from 1820 to present day. I am in love!

Hehehehe. Yes, please.

I actually got the trike because I had a 17 year old dog, and I wanted to take her everywhere. I got used to the convenience of a trike. I don't have to put my foot down to balance when I stop; and I can carry so much with me. I take a chair and a cooler to the beach with ease, not to mention groceries for a week.

I do have a regular bike, but it feels wobbly now; feeling as though I am 8 years old again isn't all bad.

If you could give just one piece of advice to folks new to running an online business, what would it be?

Follow your heart. Do what you love. If you don't love it, stop and find something you do love.

Follow your heart with your customers, too; we can't always choose them, but we can choose to look with our hearts as well as our minds. I believe that's where fulfillment comes, in our hearts.

I enjoy the mental challenge, and I appreciate the financial gain, but I love my clients and I feel as though I am helping them.

I would apply that to SEO. People ask should I do article marketing, link building or participate in forums? I say do what all that you enjoy; you will give your best and get the most that way.

Thank you. Because I don't see them as being good enough. Cricket's work intimidates me. Isn't that pathetic?

I knew this thread would reveal my underbelly!

You are good enough. I have some in there. No body has made fun of mine. The only way to get better is to do. Also seeing good works is good also.

It's quite common, counter-productive, and hard to overcome.

Perhaps this will provide some inspiration.

Decades ago, I built and flew u-line controlled model airplanes. In one particular competition, I had but one serious challenger, the very same one who had taught me how to fly, and who was the current State Champion.

The very last event was solo stunt flying, one in which I knew that I would make a rather poor showing compared to him. Despite the fact that I had beat him handily in the one-on-one combat event, and was most likely close to him in the scoring for other events, I was so certain that his stunt performance would so well assure him of an overall first place finish that I choose to sit it out rather than be embarrassed.

When the final scores were tallied, I was in 2nd place by a mere 2 points. Had I done no more than simply successfully taken off and landed in the stunt event, I'd have beaten him overall.
