The boss told me I don't need to sit there and click "New Posts" every 30 seconds (who knew?). Oh and about the raise... he said "Stick a jack up your ass." No respect...

I think the same time and effort invested in a solid commercial enterprise is much better.

yep, u r right there, if the aim is money. of course i did place some ads here and there in the forum, but i believe that whoever makes a forum, first and foremost makes it for fun... after all it's a lot of work, and a lot of DAILY work. forums where the admin is inactive tend to go proceed slower. but once u get it going it's great to have ur own board.
maybe it's just a syndrome i have; every time i make a site -- it's online a few hours and... wow, how come no one visited? no page rank 9?
I agree that paying for posts is a sign of desperation, but that very very first start is hard. big boards attract, and on the contrary empty ones put off.
But, thanks for your support, looks like the engine is warming up now.. 3 days = 16 members and 143 posts... means I am gonna have almost 2,000 members by the end of the year

serious now, my main website gets a lot of traffic, and following this lil` success i decided to add a board to it. now the issue is: ok, ppl visit, download free stuff and "go home". but how do i pull them into the forum?
another thing that seem like a problem (again, after the forum has online 1 day) is that who would want to register while the forum is still small? no one knows it's new, so people will only think it's dead...
any ideas how to make that very first start?

Yes, get rid of those rules. They are far too many and too strict anyways. You can maybe post some in the future if membership builds. This is my sincere primary advice. I wish you luck with it, Liza.

Lorelei, You could always offer to PM a link to more pictures of yourself to all who join your forum.

That's the best idea I've heard yet, but I am sure that it would be against the rules.
Honestly though, I took one look at those rules and I was outta there ... and I know and like her FFS! I was going to join before I saw those rules. I really think she should get rid of them for now.

Who's rules? Yours or hers? It is her forum so she makes up the rules.

Are you serious? WTF do you think I am talking about here? I didn't make up those rules. Of course hers!
I am giving her some advice that may or may not help get it off the ground, but it is my sincere advice and I can't think of any better.

I wasn't serious. Both of those posts were just for fun. I am trying to get a forum going so I am taking all the suggestions into consideration too.

Get a few people in there to stir up things, I'm serious. Throw those rules right out the window for now, you can slap some up in the future IF things get going, but you'll want a bare minium ... not all that stuff you've got there now ... those would scare the daylights out of even nice people. LOL
Hey, I'm not that bad a guy am I? But I would never join a forum with rules like that, not a chance. People want to have a little fun, you know?

Thanks, Atom and everyone for your help. BTW, I did join Lorelei's forum. The only thing I thought of that would help it is extra topics.

my forum will drown down in saliva..........lol
Thanks atom!
I really have very few rules, like not to harass other members, not to PM with spam, and a few more very basic stuff that are there to ensure peace between nations...lol

I don't want to make too many topics / forums that will remain intact... maybe once the forum grows some more, i will listen to my member's needs and add new sections according to their needs?
come on... after all it only 5 days old!

Your forum is just a we baby, but it is growing well. I wish you the bes of luck with it. I don't think the forum will drown in saliva but only the keyboards of all the male members.

Not a bad looking forum really ... pretty new I see. You might want to go through and fix stuff like this:
Ideas ... hmmm ... have to think some more on it, timing is wrong. I just wanted to let you know I have visited. I'll think on it and maybe come up with an idea hopefully.
