Thumbs down Fighting On The Internet

I am working on an article about fighting (disrespectfully disagreeing) on the internet. I would love to hear your input.

Why do you think discussions escalate so quickly online?

There are people that will say anything to get a rise out of someone, ie- trolls. Though in real life most are probably dweebs who are afraid of their own shadow and not trusted to do much more than make coffee by those that know them... they grow muscular and gain a black belt plus degrees in economics and philosophy when they log in.

They are fearless when they think they are protected by anonymity and many miles between themself and the person they're insulting.

- Party 1 thinks he's going to get the last word in.
- Party 2 thinks he's going to put party 1 in his place, because he's 'much more clever.'
- Both get pissed when it doesn't happen.
- "Rinse, lather, repeat..."

Primarily because they can't see the person on the 'other side of the monitor'.

It is a depersonalized environment that tends to bring out the worst in all of us. I would never stand in your living room or backyard while at a party as your guest and say some the things I post online. And I like to think I am pretty good most of the time.

Now if you want to see rude and obnoxious you should spend some time on Usenet. It makes threads we delete here look like kinder-garden. Or is that kindergarten? Spell checkers help but don't do all the work.

None of the answers above are correct and anyone that believes they are probably has an intimate relationship with farm animals.

I personally find such practice of forum fighting distasteful and am personally prepared to fight anyone who begs to differ.

Boredom, variety of subjects, simple means of ending the fight, desire to impress unknown people, liberty to say anything without consequences combined with a slight touch of ego. Perfect recipe for information exchange in a non polite way...

I would like to read the article when you are done Cricket. I could use some good content for my blog social spat. (Not that I will scrape, but it might give me some ideas) It seems people show less respect for one another online. They are not physically intimidated and let loose with words pretty fast. Common sense prevails in person. If a 6' 5" 300 pound man is talking to you, good chance you are going to listen instead of get in their face. Settings and circumstances could change that of course.

I've got scars that say otherwise but that might be a regional thing.

I used to be quick to get into an internet argument. These days as I work on improving myself both physically and in strength of character I find myself much less inclined to bother.

I am slowly coming to realise that nobody ever wins an argument. So it's not really worth bothering.

And screw you Robjones! how dare you... meh nevermind, can't be bothered

It's easy to come up with an argument in the internet as it's just a matter of typing and clicking. And most people who fights in the internet are brave enough coz they don't know the people personally.

You can hide your identity and get away easily in the cyberworld unlike in real life.

It's easy to say something when you can type it and run away. Anonymity gives the protection to be more confrontational.

Ever notice how when you queue in a shop people tend to observe the niceties, but when you are in a jam on the road, other drivers will cut in all over the place? You have that separation in the car, and don't have to look at the people you just jumped in front of, which makes it easier to act in a way that you would not do normally. Guess it is the same sort of distance online, but magnified. Just my tuppence (don't take offense!).
