I have heard more than once in my life that I think too much.
It's one of my biggest strengths, and also one of my biggest weaknesses...

I think in fairness to all that I might agree the video over-simplified the process to make a point, but the process is real. Not only is it real over time it even has a boom-a-rang effect. You shall reap what you sow. Sow kindness and consideration and ultimately you shall harvest the same. The converse is also true so hate and discontent and your future will contain some misery.
If I suddenly came into a million, I would be a good non consumptive steward and multiply it to the best of my ability for it is only mine for a short few years.

Then what are you both waiting to change hundreds of lifes?
You don't need a million dollars, go walk the streets and gift $1 to every needed person.
If you already made it, my congratulations to you, if you didn't then you don't really think it works or you're too selfish.
I didn't make it because I don't think it works, that's my excuse, what's yours? xD

I think I saw the film differently than others may have, but as I mentioned, I tend to think too much.
I saw it as the author simply trying to represent how very little it takes to make a difference in the world around us. In fact, if you read the author’s message about this film, he asks the viewers a question.

Is he asking for Change, or is he asking for CHANGE? Follow a man as he affects multiple peoples' lives with just one dollar, proving that it doesn't take much to be the change in someone's life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DXL9vIUbWg

This short film reminds me of another one called, “Pay It Forward”.
That one too may have seemed unrealistic to some, but for me, it had an incredible impact on my life.
It made a difference in my life, and helped me begin to make a difference in the life of others.
I believe that we truly do have the power to make a difference in the life of others through our simple acts of kindness.
In this story I wrote some time back, I don’t know if I made a difference in her life, but I do know that if only for a moment, she knew someone cared.
If I suddenly had a million dollars, I would buy an old van to restore and convert and I would fund the next stage of my dream for the future that involves continuing to live a life of making of difference every time I have the chance – one simple act of kindness at a time…
If that's too deep for this thread, then I would buy some new camera equipment too.
Okay, I promise to get off my soap box and hush now.

With no personal disrespect intended; I am not sure if you were asking me or not but I choose to answer. Ignore me if you were not responding to me.
Hopefully I change one life at a time and often it does not require money. A friendly smile or some kind words to someone who is having a bad day are often worth more than a hundred dollars.
I rarely give money to pan-handlers. We do support the local shelters. When the spirit moves me I do rent to questionable people, taking a chance hard nosed corporations would not take. My success ratio with that is not outstanding but overall I feel successful doing it. They were offered the chance, what they make of it is their choice.

We started talking about changing lifes, the cruel reality does not have a happy ending like in the movies.
You can "save the day" for someone, maybe, just maybe with $1, or give a nice few seconds/minutes of smiles, then a few minutes/hours later the problems come back, they are still homeless, they are still drug addicts.
Poor people will be still being poor with $1 in their pocket, they need education, a job, a home, food, and such.
Like I said before, I've lived in the streets for a few months, no home, no food, no money. $1 wouldn't change me at all...
I was a addict to cocaine for 8 years, do you think $1 could possibly change my life? I've been in need of $1 for that phone call... but it wouldn't changed ANYTHING, just saved the day.
The girl with the phone call in the video... why did she left home? maybe his father is a rapist or something... and you're sending her home again with $1... great favor!... come on... if you have a good family you will never left your home.
I agree the film is a very emotive way to show how $1 can save someone's day or "promote a little change", I have accumulated some tears in my eyes and still do every time I look at it, anyway, it is absolutely not a life change.
Many factors were not considered by the author of the film, I understand, is a film, should be like that, but if you are thinking like it works in real life, I don't think it is like that.
Anyway we're doing too much offtopic, the thread is about how to make money with 1 million dollars, what would you do with the money, what would be your choice for investments and such, it was not intended to charity at all, but it would be an option if you choose to.

It's possible that a dollar could change someone's life, but as you say, it's not likely. But it's not about the dollar. It's about the act of giving. Caring. Being the recipient of such kindness could very well change one's life. Including yours.

I am most pleased to here the word "was". I hope your life is on the upturn.
I am also willing to admit that you most likely have a much different perspective than I do. I think we have found common ground and fully agree:

What would I do? Spend it all on women and alcohol. Not to be confused with all you guys who'd probably just waste it.

This is what I would do with a million dollars:
20k - A used BMW, I'm not picky, but I like any old BMW 325i.
50k - For my actual business advertising (IntroMaker.NET).
50k - Different online businesses.
200k - I don't know how it says in english, "treasure bonds"? ("bonos del tesoro" in spanish).
200k - Shares, specially Apple, Microsoft and big companies.
200k - Buy cheap houses/departments to rent here at Uruguay.
30k - A travel with my wife and son, just to let my son know other countries, see other traditions and customs, maybe Spain, Netherlands, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, India, and U.S. (I want to see if U.S. is really like in the movies, I'm sure I'll be disappointed anyway).
The rest (250k) would be enough to start some sort of different business, I never do anything that I don't like to do, so probably I'll go with something related to computers/programming/animation/video editing, I would pay careers/training to several friends who I know they really need to work. No charity. WORK.
You can call me selfish, but I wouldn't do any charity acts.

If I were single and no children I would go with that too, maybe we can get a discount if we go with 2 millions?

Figured. The line you mentioned was what brought it to mind. You know what they say, depraved minds think alike.

I'd probably make it grow by putting up a small business or perhaps investing it on a growing business.

I would buy a house holding 13 rooms so that when my family comes they have a place to stay, I would make it so that my parents house are stable and if not that I would have them move in with me. I would donate 600 dollars to the orphanage each year, and medicine, I would create a dome for health plants and more, I would create a school site for kids who need special features so that they can prove to people that they can be successful just as others can as well.

Not for one million, but for a couple of millions, retire and travel the world.
