Solar Panels

My husband just visited last week with the HVAC guy we work with and he said he bought $2500 worth of solar panels new off of craigslist and installed them at his shop - connecting them only to his heating and cooling system.

His electric bill went from over $300 to $65.

Do any of you all have solar power? What are your experiences?

One of our systems at the house is 100% electric so if it was sunny, we could use it for heating and cooling.... it sounds pretty appealing.

I do believe in solar panels, but I have a really hard time seeing them as a source to drive an HVAC system. HVAC loads are huge compared to the realistic output of solar panels. I would suggest caution and research before parting with any dinero.

I find it hard to believe that a $2500 solar installation can provide that much of a reduction in an electric bill. (The $2500 cost wouldn't only be for the panels; an inverter and battery bank would undoubtedly be needed as well.)

To save $235 per month (assuming $0.15 per kilowatt-hour), the system would need to be generating over 1500 kilowatt-hours per month. That's a lot of power.
