I know 40 year olds that probably shouldn't be having sex, but I don't think there need to be laws about it.

True..some are mentally handicapped. The point is, they know what sex is and what can happen if they have sex. It should be up to them to decide, not the law.

In my opinion many of the laws to 'protect' children are discriminative towards children and show a blatant lack of respect for them as a person.

A lot of mentally handicapped people don't know what sex is or the risks involved in having sex. I understand that certain laws are there to protect them but this is definately better decided by loved ones on an individual basis than as a blanket fix by the government.

age of consent is 18 in the US. I think that has a lot to do with the idea that when you graduate from High School you're an adult. it also has to do with the fact that until you're 18, you're basically the responsibility of your parent, unless you become emancipated and then I'm not sure what the sex laws are at that point.

I don't know many 16 year old boys however, that would be 'mature' enough to pass up a piece of hoo hoo if it was offered, so I don't think that this boy would have been making a rational decision if he's got his groove on, so to speak. For right or wrong, there is a law about it, and a 39 year old woman should know what the law is and abide by it, until the law is changed.

For the record, if a 39 year old man was sleeping with my 16 year old daughter it would have been my husband's mug shot you would have been seeing because he would have killed him.

It's not 18 everywhere in the US. It varies by state. It's 16 I know in my state (Ohio).

Like many things there have to be standards. Like who decided 21 you should be able to drink, 18 for cigs, 14 for drivers permit, 16 to drive alone, 65 to get a discount, 25 in your prime, 30 to old etc. Now personally I don't give a shit if some 16 yr old was banging the hell out of that lady or if they were in love or whatever what I do care is that it's not my son & I don't look like her except in the morning

It means that 14 year olds are respected for their own choice, provided that there's no adults involved.

It means that when they play 'doctor' they are not doing anything illegal, as they would in other countries.
