The More You Know....

How many of you believe that it's not okay to throw rice at weddings anymore, because it hurts the birds?

Did you know it's false?

Don't worry, I'm not left out of the "feeling dumb" category either
I've believed this rumor for my entire life!

It's kind of like discovering that it isn't illegal to pick Bluebonnets in Texas.

Guess I shouldn't pickup that Alka-Seltizer for my next trip to the beach.

I can't have any fun no more.

I have something which I thought was fake, but I tested it, and it really works.

I think this rumor has been propagated by the people with tiny fingers making all those little bags of bird seed...

WAIT!! Perhaps the birds are at the source of this entire fiasco.

I mean... what would you rather eat if you were a sparrow?

Am I the only one who found it interesting that the ones (The USA Rice Federation) to "expose this myth" have a vested interest in the continued and increased sales of rice?

How about hearing from an ornithologist?
Wouldn't they be best qualified to discuss what is and is not healthy for birds?
Even the supposed justification in the story is lame. I spotted it and I am no expert.
They are comparing wet rice in a flooded field (already swollen) to the dry rice thrown at weddings (not yet swollen).
That doesn't strike me as genuine.

I can't tell if you are teasing or serious today ... I'm going to make a pot of coffee after I send this to correct that problem.

They did consult with the Cal Berkeley Ornithologist....

"It's a myth. There is no reason why birds, including small songbirds, can't eat rice," said Ned Johnson, a professor of biology at Berkeley who lectures frequently on the food and feeding of birds.

I think that it's interesting that an article from Ann Landers changed how people celebrate weddings.

People will believe anything in print.

I read that, but his statement directly followed the statement that compared saturated rice with dry rice.
It was unclear if his statement built upon the previous one or if it was standing on its own.

True enough, and that includes Snopes articles.
And that was my point. Can't just take these things at face value anymore.

Incidentally, I spoke to a bird expert friend of mine.
I don't know if she's an ornithologist, but she's definitely a bird girl and I trust her judgement.
(That's worth more to me than 3 experts in print that I can never contact)
She said that, while it is possible that the bird's stomach could explode after eating rice, the chances of it happening are very slim. The bird would have to fill up on rice and then drink a large amount of water relatively soon afterwards. In her opinion, not worth worrying about due to the fact that it almost never happens.
As you've just read this on the internet, take that as you will.
