Both! You have to pair exercise with diet. If you only do diet, you'll lose weight but might have some saggy parts all over your body. Exercise will help you tone your muscle. You'd be in a much better shape. I usually do both. I don't usually cut much in my diet. Diet for me is eating healthy and just enough food.

If you had to choose between exercise and diet, to lose fat, then the one that works best is diet.

Doing both will of course speed things up and also give you a stronger heart and better circulation but if you are just talking about losing fat and had to choose the most effective, then diet is the one.

A lot of professional personal trainers claim that fat loss is 75% diet and 25% exercise.

I would recommend both. If you will go for diet only, the process will be too slow because your metabolism will go down because of lack of usual amount of calories. If you go only for exercise, your metabolism will work better but you will start eating more.

I've even heard the ratio as high as 80-20 - and I can't disagree. For just losing weight - tangible diet changes are usually the go-to. However, adding a couple of cardio sessions along with body-weight training or even weight training (dumbbells) for a total of 4 sessions per week, IMO, is a good plan.

I don't think anyone should starve themselves to lose weight, the best way would be to cut down on the amount you eat a little bit and obviously exercise more to loss more calories than you are taking in from food and this is the best way to lose weight.

Its better to follow both to loose weight. Doing just one of them will take a very long time to actually show the result provided you should do it for a long time without breaking your diet or exercise whatever you chose to do.

I find exercise to be a dirty word. For that reason I suggest increased activity and moderation in eating.

Now think about it; no jumping jacks or 100 yard sprints. Just turn off the computer and get your butt moving doing something you enjoy.

Use them both. Exercise without good diet ruins everything. Diet without good exercise is futile. Exercise is king and diet is queen. Put them together and you have a kingdom! (I think Jack Lalaine said this).

Guys, the question he user asked is to choose between exercise or diet, not both.

Which one do you think is the quickest way to lose weight if you had to choose one?

Exercise definitely !! For speedy results . Diet can stop you from becoming fat but you need to work out to loose calories . If you club together , results i am sure will be great and permanent .

I don't understand what this even means.

As a qualified personal trainer, gym instructor and spinning instructor, you would think that I would say exercise, but I can tell you that if you wanted to just lose fat (or weight as the OP calls it) and had to just choose one from the two, then the most effective method is diet.

The right diet will give you more energy, make you feel lighter, give you a clearer head and also help with many ailments such as IBS, gout, lethargy, dizziness and lack of concentration.

The right diet will allow the body to process food quickly, effectively, provide ALL the nutrients your body needs to function at optimal performance.

It will allow your body to shift fat cells faster than you can imagine.

Exercise will do some of these things but not to the degree that a healthy diet can.

Exercise is great for the CardioVascular system and will strengthen your heart and allow your body to produce more oxygen for better performance. It allows the body to produce "feel-good" endorphins which will make you want to do more exercise and have a clearer head - (though it usually takes about a week or two of exercise to get to this stage)

If one is prone to mild depression or to mild panic attacks, then exercise will help alleviate these also and is highly recommended, but if it is a choice between exercise or diet and your goal is to lose fat cells, then go with diet.
