The Spanish Flu killed an estimated 20 million people throughout the world. Predominantly the young I might add.
Every 60 to 70 years there is a new variation that our immune systems can't cope with. That's what happened with the Spanish Flu, the young had little immunity so suffered worst. The older generations faired better because of repeated infections over the years from the flu viruses.
The new one is over due btw, hence the stock piling of anti-viral drugs by most sensible governments world wide. They were thinking that bird flu would mutate and infect humans. Fortunately it has not, up to now.

Oh yes that flu was a nasty one - I assume that's the 1918 pandemic you're referring to? There were a few other smaller pandemics (though I think they were called epidemics) throughout the 20th century, the last noteworthy one in the 1960s (a man I work with caught it as a child and barely survived).
There was a swine flu scare in the 1970s but it never turned into a pandemic as feared. There followed a mass vaccination, and more people ended up dying from the vaccine than from the flu itself. So some books tell me.
But that's the flu virus, which can do lots of damage. I think KJ was referring to the common cold virus, which I think does kill some number of people a year, but usually through some sort of wacky complication. Again, so some books and websites tell me. So this is all cheap second hand knowledge. Useful as a used kleenex, so I've heard.

Doh! Well now I just feel stupid. Again!
Colds - Rhinovirus
Flu - Influenza virus
"... Although it is sometimes confused with the common cold, Influenza is a much more severe disease and is caused by a different type of virus ..."
Sorry!

Hey, you are out of the equation now. The question has taken on a life of its own.

I was thinking to myself: ooooh risotto sounds so good! Then, darn it, I scrolled up one notch, and saw Christy and SITA discussing phlegm!
....not so hungry anymore.
