Are energy drinks harmful?

Hello,

I've heard by many people that it's harmful for health to drink energy drinks (Like Redbull, etc)

Is that true? If so, then how and why is it harmful?

Depending what sort of energy drink you are talking about.

Red Bull contains ingredients like Taurine and Caffeine, both known to accelerate heart rate and too many are definitely bad for you.

If you are talking about energy drinks such as Gatorade or Lucozade (isotonic), then these not terribly bad for you but they do contain sugars and can be calorific.

If you are using them with exercise, then you don't really need anything other than water if you are doing up to 90 minutes exercise, after that, the body will deplete certain minerals and the exercise range of energy drinks would come in handy.

In regards to the opening thread, as more time goes on and on it seems that drinking too much of it has caused problems. Usually excessive drinking of most beverages can be harmful , such as excessive drinking of coffee, beer, wine, and energy drinks. The reason why I believe drinking too much is harmful is related to the information below:

According to to an article by the N.Y Times back in November of 2102, it stated that "the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that the annual number of emergency room visits in this country linked to energy drinks rose to more than 12,000 in 2009, the latest year for which data was available. The figure represents a tenfold jump from the number of such visits reported in 2005." The full article is posted below.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/16/bu...rows.html?_r=0

There was a period of time when I personally drank least 1 can of Monster per day and I had no ill effects. Yet I did not go overboard and drank 5 or 6 cans per day, that too me was excessive and also not very cost effective. This is just my personal opinion but the article above does shed some light on how drinking too much of it has reasons for concern.

I would say that too much would be harmful. A while back I was seriously addicted to caffeine and it was surprising how much it took to stop that addiction. The headaches sucked and it made me physically sick.

Yes ,Caffeine tolerance varies between individuals, but for most people a dose of over 400mg/day may produce some initial symptoms: restlessness, increase heartbeat, and insomnia.

Taking limited amount of Caffeine is not bad for human body but taking Caffeine on daily basis can be harmful for your body and withdrawal could be more difficult as you have to face some sever problems during withdrawal process like Headache, Morning sickness, problems in digestive systems.

everything in limit is good,
but its bit different it has bad effect in small quantity.
so if you are using it on regular basis then it will surely harm you because it contain caffeine which is the poison[slow].

so if you are gonna get it occasionally then its good but regular you should avoid.

better go for some natural practices for better energy experience

Consuming large doses of caffeine can cause significant harm to the human body. Some of the most common and most noticeable effects of excessive caffeine consumption include: heart palpitations, tremors, chest pain, headaches, dizziness, and insomnia. Additionally, prolonged daily consumption will more than likely lead to physical dependence and psychological addiction. For people who do become physically dependent on caffeine, cutting back on the amount of caffeine that is regularly consumed can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms. Although this is the case, many people (including myself) disregard these facts and continue to consume energy drinks at an alarming rate.

This is true because once you make use of it or take it in a wrong manner you can face some health problems. These energy drinks have lots of sugar & caffeine which provides us energy for a short span. They are being sold in the market as other drinks but can be dangerous due to the ingredients from which they are made of in comparison of those typical drinks that we all take.
