What is the future of social networking site like facebook ?

I am little curious about knowing the future of facebook ? I personally feel with time the preference of the users change, in yesteryear it was orkut which almost disappeared, and when whatsapp came into being the future of FB was a bit shaky, so they acquired whatsapp to save the brand. what is your opinion ?

Still Facebook is running too far from these G+ , Whatsapp and others. As a largest network people will always prefer Facebook if it continues free and awesome services like walls, groups, fan page, video calling & voice calling. There are more reasons Facebook will remain in the top.

I feel pretty safe in saying we're looking at an AOL-esque decline for Facebook. And like AOL

People said the same exact thing about Myspace. Yet Facebook remains popular and Myspace completely got rid of the way it used to work. It's unrealistic to think that it's not possible for another social network to come into play.

I read somewhere that facebook is an illusion, its like a magnet which attract people from all over the world. Orkut was most popular before facebook came in and i think orkut is almost extinct.

Facebook pushed Myspace to the background.
Myspace pushed Friendster to the background.

Something else will come along and push Facebook to the background.

I think Facebook's future is still very clear. I joined the site year 2004 because a friend of mine asked me to join. The reason I joined is because it's free. I could use chat services and get to know people's interest and activities. As long as FB is upgrading in line with it's user's preferences, then it will definitely maintain the position where it is now.

I reckon facebook will grow even bigger and bigger if they do it right, but you never know someone might make a better more improved version.

With the way facebook is managing its policies I see a bleak future ahead for it.

I don't see facebook going away anytime soon. I don't see it would end just like friendster. They would continue to reinvent themselves depending on what the trend will be. what I am curious about is what they would try to come up with so people would continue to use their website.

I think it could go either way. People always change their minds though, and social media will need to keep up with massive changes in technology, as will all other established tech companies.

i think eventually twitter and facebook may combine. it would be like a super social network. Then they may get instagram in on it.
