The Zone Diet
I'm headed for 40 and feel like I should get a healthier lifestyle - I saw someone on tv talking about this diet that supposedly levels your hormones etc. I'm halfway through the book and it just seems so complicated, but makes a lot of sense.
Has anyone tried this? Is it as complicated as it seems?

Dieting isn't that difficult, you don't need to try any of these fad and restrictive diets. You don't have to eliminate anything completely from your diet. We all know what we should and shouldn't eat, it's just a matter of deciding to do it. Add in some simple exercise (walking) with a sensible diet (more cooking at home, smaller portions, less butter and fats in your meals, more vegetables) and you should be fine. The Zone is harder than say atkins cause the zone has a balance and atkins really is just 'no carbs'.

Diet Queen - it's kinda obvious with the key words -
BTW, I decided not to do anything with the "diet" fads. Instead, I got a pilates machine. ; )

I think she's on the "spam" diet. She's posted something similar in a related thread.
I've never tried Pilates...how are you liking it so far?

I'm right behind you in age! I lost about 30 pounds in the last year but that was because my FIL had a 5 bypass and my husband now watches fat intake like crazy. It is so easy though. We just look at the fat and saturated fat content and stay really low. And absolutely no trans fat. But it is amazing how good a lot of the non-fat (or really low fat) items taste.
But I still love my chocolate!!!!

I agree to some extent. Women are a different creature though. Their bodies are just so incredibly different from men's that I don't think it 100% appropriate to put them both in the same category for types of exercise and dieting, but that's just me.

Actually, I think that the Zone diet makes the most sense of all the popular diets out there.
No need to sweat the details. He's basically recommending:
1. Eat less.
2. Cut down on carbohydrates. What carbs you eat should mostly be fruits and veggies.
3. Don't be afraid of eating a good chunk of monounsaturated fats (olive oil, almonds, etc).
4. Try and eat your carbs and proteins and fats all at the same time.
That's about it unless you want to get bogged down on details.
At least that's how I interpret it :-)

The problem with the zone diet is the 40-30-30 balance, it's not as easy as it would seem, very restrictive.
It's 2006, there's more than enough information for anyone to alter their diet enough and increase their exercise to eat healthier...

My theory for healthy living is: everything in moderation....and exercise 3-5 times per week. Plus, for women....weight-bearing exercises are especially good for increasing bone density as we get older.

LOL, I've been on that diet for about 2 years now and it's worked well. But I want to get my nipple pierced so I'm trying to cut first...actually eating a little better as a result.
