Forum disease

Hi all,

I would prefer making a comment on the quality posting thread, but it is locked.

So i start a new post about quality of forum posts.

I am a forum webmaster since 1999. It is a mechanical engineering related forum in the Greek language. It does really well in the SERPS, especially when considering the unpopular niches (comparing to lifestyle, beauty, beting, smartphones e.t.c. niches) and after all these years, it ranks No1 for many hundreds long tale keywords, and is 1st page on many single word niche related keywords.

In 1999 after i put the forum up and running, i started writing by myself on the forum. After a long and lonely time i found another guy crazy enough to make a discussion. And after a long time we found other crazy-enough-guys to participate in technical discussions. After a long time internet got popular in Greece and it was impossible to avoid the forum if you searched google for hvac related keywords.

The first team of forum members were the job's really crazy guys, the kind of guys that always search for something new to improve our work, the kind of guys who know first how our business sector will be in some years.

All these guys who deeply knew their job, started opening public hvac related discussions on every special situation and every aspect of our work. Apart from the friendship that came along, our continuous effort created a vast high quality knowledge database, that provides all answers to any hvac related question. At that time, both forum admins and visitors, wrote threads with explanatory analytical information, and got back free valuable, high quality answers with photos, diagramms, hand made sketches e.t.c.
Forum has no advertising income

The last few years (to come to my point), I notice a very big decrease in quality of posts. An invincible percentage (forum admins understand why i used the word invincible) of forum members behave like they are the smart guys who found the stupid specialists to solve their problems for free.

The "new kind of guy" posts threads like "How do i increase website traffic" and "How do i get traffic from SE! Urgent!!!" and "Look! this is my new website!" and all sort of "Let me google it for you" answered questions (fitted in your niche).

This "new kind of guy" is the "I never search" guy. He will post the same question again and again, even if it is answered on a 25 pages sticky thread

This "new kind of guy" is the "I do not read, I only post" kind of guy. He doesn't care if the entire thread gets to have no meaning thanks to his irrelevant contribution. He will read the thread question, he will post his opinion in a single sentence, even if another member has analysed the same thing in a 2000 word post.

I was thinking of starting this thread with the title "Forum New World Order" with this exact post, and promise you that there will be some members that will post things about David Rockefeller and The Bilderberg Club, but i didn't.

Today, i still admin the forum, but i have this melanholic feeling when i do. I have the same feeling for this forum that is "blessed and cursed" to give links that help seo efforts.

Thank you for reading this.

I will disagree somewhat with that. They search google for a answer and plagiarize that and pretend its their opinion.

Given that there are so many from India that do that here at V7n, there much be a special school there that teaches them how to do that.

Welcome here and tongue in cheek to forum admin.

Birdie also makes a very valid point.

If you factor in the number of silly SEO posts , it's almost enough to make one want to ban all Ips from India .

Sorry, I'm not joking so no smiley face here.

You can't fight "silly SEO posts" or "silly WHATEVER posts".

They don't come from India. They come from everywhere. Carelessness, ingratitude and stupidity are global virtues.

Over at another forum I Admin, the stance is as follows:

No more junk. No more spam. No more "thank you"s, no more "me too"s. No more questions that could be easily searched within the forum or on the SE's. No more link-dropping. No more repetitious fluff. No more copy & paste spammers. No fake signatures. No fake locations.

The result? Traffic is not as high as it is here, but the conversation level and topics have improved.

And how do you do that?
You delete the threads?
You ban every "thank you" member?
You ban him even if he has other "non-thank you posts"?

I would be very interested on your answer, as on our forum, we have been thinking about this for a long time, but haven't decided how to treat these situations (except for spamming - where we use spam-o-matic - and the "hi-this-is-my-link" members which are soft-banned.

The new "hi-how-do-i-increase-traffic" threads with "hi-do-comment-spamming" answers and similar low quality stupid content, overcomes older high quality threads in SERPs for the same keyword due to it's "freshness" and this is very dissappointing.

No - just the post, and that happens as soon as it is found.

No. Most members who post in this fashion should receive an in fraction "warning" first. If the member continues to post in the same spammy fashion, then a permanent ban is in order. Why ban them if you've warned them? Well, how valuable to the forum is someone who continues to post "me too", thanks for sharing" after being warned by a Mod or Admin?

Spam-o-matic is a great feature to ban the spammers (and their posts), who are clearly there to spam.

If someone joins forum, and throw out 20 junk questions that could easily be searched on the forum, - they might deserve a temp time-out (ban). If they come back and do the same thing, a permanent ban is in order.

It's possible some might just learn from the time-out and just lurk, read and learn thereafter.
