Hey, another Oprah fan... That was a really good show. My mouth dropped when he showed the tumors on the lung and how deep they went. Some of the other stuff they showed was kinda freaky too.

Hi all,

I quit over 3 years ago, in fact on my own website some people asked about the same question, read it here:

http://www.luchtzak.be/postp26283.html#26283

I would say: stop smoking now and forever!

greetz,

Bart

A few weeks ago, I helped my nephew with a school project on cancers and other health-related problems caused by smoking. While looking for some pics for him, I remember seeing these damaged lungs (one has emphysema and one has cancer) caused by smoking. Someone suggested using it for desktop wallpaper if you're trying to quit.

Good luck, John!

Hey, sorry I didn;t see this thread - how's it going, John? Did you actually maintain it, or are you steeling yourself for a different day?

I quit April 2003 and haven't lapsed yet. For myself, the real trick is to give yourself something to really focus on.

To me, the problem is that smoking is a two-fold addiction: physical, and psychological.

The physical cravings you can put off with something else - food, for example, to distract your body. It's the psychological aspect that's the real killer.

For myself I faced that by making sure I spent my last few cigarettes noticing how they didn't actually taste very nice - you know, when you've smoked too much and your tongue feels like it's been laid with a dry carpet?

That way even when I psychologically wanted a cigarette I remembered that they didn't taste very nice anyway. So by craving for something that wouldn't be a reward, it was sort of like negative conditioning.

I didn;t actually get to chose the day of quitting by choice - I came down with one of those really heavy cold/flu/infection things where you just can't breathe properly anyway. Although I'd been planning it, the choice of day was made for me because I couldn't even take a drag without my lungs collapsing on themselves to heavy wheezing.

I've been working in a smokey environment these past few weeks - on and off. The nicotine in the air must be affecting me because I'm having slight physical cravings again. However, I can still pretty much taste that last cigarette in my mouth when I think about what they really taste like, and that's no reward at all.

Btw - my nana (think: grandma) has serious emphysema. She can't even walk across a room.

Even when her breathing was repidly deteriorating she couldn't quit - until she saw something on TV about a little girl with a serious breathing condition. She asked herself what that girl deserved to have the same problems without having actually done anything wrong, it it put that into a personal perspective for her: my nana had a choice, the girl didn't. My nana acted on that choice and quit flat. Again, she erquired that psychological focus.

Has your Grandma emphysema improved? My dad smoked until he was 50. Died from emphysema at 57. Doctors blamed smoking in early life.

No - and from what I hear, there's nothing that can be done to cure emphysema. My understanding of it is that the lining of the lungs is mostly destroyed, and that can never grow back. Because I'm asthmatic (though not badly) I always considered the very real danger that I could get it next. That wasn't enough to make me quit flat, though.

Miss Vicky, I hope you get a good reply from the oprah show. Let me know what they say. I'm interested in finding out how they are about letting people use their info for a common good.

I smoked for 10 years. One day i woke up with the hackers cough and up came about a pint of blood. Doctor said that if i didn't quit very soon I'd regret it real soon. Then I gained 40 pounds.

Good Luck to you John!

I helped a friend from Tech to quit, unfortunately a year later she's smoking again "I'm just really stressed" - was her excuse.

I hate smoking in general but that doesn't stop me from having a fine cigar once a year. And only once a year - New Year's Eve usually!

The up side is you'll have more money to spend when you stop buying cigarettes.

There's no easy way to quit but from what I've since so far, your a strong individual with a determined mind & willpower. You've always stuck to your point of view and are sometimes a relentless force on these threads.

You'll do great my friend! And if you stumble just tell us here at the forums and we can all flame you till you quit!
