When I was living in New Jersey briefly, I was with my dad when he ran over a skunk (it was already dead, but he went over it as it was in the road). Aye caramba! The smell! Windows down all the way home, the stench just from the car sat in the garage permeated the whole house. Thankfully it had lost its potency and was gone in a few days. I can easily imagine that the smell alone from a live one of those things would be enough to write off a car.

There was a program called Myth Busters that tried to get a series of skunks to squirt their stinky juice on the presenters. The idea was to then see what was the best concoction to remove said smell. As I recall they gave up in the end cos they couldn't get the skunks to do their bit.

In a separate show they placed a dead pig in a car for a month. They then removed the pig and tried to clean up the car. The test for how successful they were was being able to sell the car after the clean up. Apparently the stench could not entirely be removed. Eventually someone did buy the car though.

The page isn't exactly well designed, you will need to scroll down a little bit. Also it might ask you if you are interested in pets or something, just cancel the box thing. Normally I wouldn't refer people to pages like this, but this one is well worth the pictures.
