Well, I suppose I have to throw my hat in this thread. I do smoke and I'm not real happy about it. Isla nailed it though. I'm not ready to quit....yet. But I'm not enjoying it anymore either. I've smoked for almost 30 years. I started very young too. I think my time may be coming. And yes, Cricket, I promise to read the stories/articles. Haven't yet but I will today

Smoked one cigarrette one time as a child. Aside from some misguided smokes of the left-handed variety as a teen, nothing. Not really against it though. Whatever suits the individual.

I personally find no reason in smoking. It's cancer on a stick (cigarettes)

umm, smoking issue, well I seen my dad quit 2 years before he died of
something different then cancer.

I worked as programmer for over 30 years at the same company, and I
thought that if my dad could quit so can I, I did quit for over a year
but my skills on programming kept sliding down untill I got fired. and
I then lost my car, my home, and my family, my wife left me, and I
could go on and on.

Now I started smoking again becouse of all the bad things going on
in my life and I got a new job, paying more, and I am in the top 10
of the best programmers in the company, and I have my life back.
But I know if I quit, I will lose that again.

So, sometimes, a bad habbit can be so gripping that it is something
that calms you, enough to bring the best out of you, and if this is
true for others, as it was for me, then how can I even aford to quit?

The reason why I can't program when I quit is becouse no matter how
long I go without a cig, I don't ever heal, and my mind and body still
thinks about it, this makes your mind wonder. you would think that
after quiting for over a year I would be over smoking.

But you would be dead wrong, you never do get over it. infact, anyone
who plays with the thought that time will heal this type of addiction is
fooling themself's, and has a very limited view on the true subject.

Most people here that do not have the habbit, I would say, stay that way.
and those who have the habbit, should know that if the day comes that
you deside to quit, you will have a battle and if you can handle that
battle, then go for it.

And to those, who have never smoked for years, but still try to make or
help others to quit, are fooling themself. it's not easy, it's not a peice
of cake to take lightly. for most smokers, quiting can couse other bad
things to happen, even couse over eating, or other bad habbits to creap
in, that are just as bad as smoking if not worse.

So I just ask that people give more thought about this habbit, and that
they see it in the real light it is in, before they give advice that may have
a very bad impact on someones life.

Never smoked. My ex did, though. Although, he always smoked outside. And he finally quit. After about ten tries.

It's hard to explain, But I could give it a try.
Trough the years when I was smoking, I guess without knowing
it, I used smoking as a release when life gave me to much presure.

So, if this was true, then when I would get frustrated with a program
having a bug and I would not find it, and the pressure of the boss giving
the project your on a time limit, a good smoke seemed to calm me down
enough to think and work out the problem, But I really never new this was
happening, or I never really gave it a thought.

So when I quit, The issue started to show it's ugly face. Now I did not
really get fired right away, but becouse I was one of the top programmers
I was given more slack, so after about a year of the company getting tired
of this, they just canned me.

Nore did I myself know that quiting was what the whole problem was.
But as I look back, I can see that I was edgy, unfocued, none creative.
becouse without knowing it, I used smoking and my system expected it.

You see all those years of smoking, I never learned to handle presure
without using a cig here and there, but did not really know I was using it
to calm me down. You see this in alot of smokers, when they hear bad news
that affects them, or they get upset, you will see them light up and puff
on the cig more offten then when they feel ok, and calm.

if you use something for so long, you rely on it and can't do it anyother way.
so smoking can really effect people, and not always in the same way.
each person does use smoking in different ways. so it will effect them
in different ways when they quit.

But they all get affected on being edgy, and unfocued with thoughts of
having a cig, and the ones who have not tried to quit, but have ran out
of smokes has had that issue of thinking about how they can get some
and how fast.

It's a bad habbit in deed. but not as easy to quit as some would suggest.
the less years you have smoked the easier it is to quit. so there is alot
of people who have quit becouse they did not smoke for alot of years.

And there are some who have quit even when they had been smoking for
many years. becouse everyone is effected by smoking differently, which
would suggest that everyone smokes for different reasons.

Yup! The 5th is the first day of a new smokefree life for me, even if I have to padlock myself in closet for a month. As addicted as I am to nicotine, I am pretty addicted to living too!
